Overview

We are seeking an ambitious and talented individual to join the School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanities in a 12‑month fixed‑term position to develop our research, teaching and knowledge exchange in Early Modern British History. The post will cover a staff member who has gained external research funding.

The role requires a PhD in Early Modern British History or a related subject, proven teaching ability and administrative skills. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to and enhance undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, support students’ learning and research skills, and participate in the School’s strategic agenda.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute fully to the History unit as a teacher, researcher, leader and collaborator.
  • Conduct personal research for publication in high‑quality journals and present at conferences in line with School and Faculty strategy.
  • Deliver teaching and undertake assessments of modules, including preparing teaching material, encouraging critical engagement, managing innovative teaching methods and providing support outside class times.
  • Supervise students’ projects and dissertations.
  • Undertake course evaluation, facilitate student feedback, reflect on teaching design and delivery, and implement ideas for improvement.
  • Act as an academic tutor for students and, where appropriate, refer them to relevant university services.
  • Participate in the School’s administrative processes, including committee membership, quality assurance procedures and recruitment and admission of students.
  • Contribute to the School and Faculty’s knowledge exchange and civic engagement agenda.
  • Uphold the principles of the Sheffield Academic and contribute to excellence in applied teaching, research and scholarship.
  • Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in Early Modern British History or a related subject.
  • Demonstrable track record of quality peer‑reviewed publications.
  • Teaching experience in History.
  • Experience supervising undergraduate and postgraduate taught students.
  • Ability to design and lead taught modules and programmes.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, including report writing and presentation delivery.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently with a high degree of personal effectiveness.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to liaise with colleagues, students and external partners.
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion principles and practices.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience supervising postgraduate research students.
  • Ability to deliver research impact through public engagement, consultancy or other activities beyond academia.

Further Information

  • Grade: 8.2
  • Salary: £48,822 per annum
  • Duration: Fixed Term 12 months from 1 September 2026 until 31 August 2027
  • Hours of work per week: Full‑time
