We're seeking someone to support the Council's Information Governance Unit and its project response team to the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry as an Information Asset Officer.

What will you do?

  • You will search, review and redact historic and semi‑current social work records to facilitate access, primarily via data protection legislation, to various audiences, including care‑experienced individuals, the police, Redress and the national inquiry itself. This work will involve reading difficult material about historical child abuse.
  • You will also facilitate access to the Council's records and archives. This includes supporting the use of the Council's off‑site records storage contract with Iron Mountain through account management, training and issue resolution. Likewise, you will support access to the City Archives by occasionally invigilating the public access searchroom.

What will you need to know?

  • We expect you to be qualified to SVQ4 level or equivalent.
  • You need to have experience working in a large organisation, preferably a local authority, and have dealt with requests for information – whether internal or from the public.
  • You need to understand broadly what a Scottish local authority does and the types of records and data it produces. Knowledge of social work functions and information assets is particularly useful.
  • Experience and knowledge of information access (e.g. subject access requests) and records management legislation and best practices are valuable, though you can pick it up if you are willing to learn.
  • You must also be comfortable working to tight timescales and be willing to deal with sensitive and traumatic material. You will receive trauma‑informed training to help you with this.

This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out of the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both checks being deemed satisfactory.

We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce where everyone feels valued and able to be their best. We particularly encourage applications from women for senior roles, as well as people from minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities or neurodivergent people, care‑experienced people, carers and LGBT+ people across all levels of the organisation, all of whom are currently under‑represented. All applicants will be considered fairly based on skills and experience. Disabled and care‑experienced applicants who meet the minimum job criteria will be guaranteed an interview.

Happy to talk flexible working.
