Our client is seeking an experienced Underwriting Assistant – UK Casualty to provide high-quality technical and administrative support to a London-based underwriting team. This role is integral to underwriting operations, supporting efficient processing, accurate data management, and compliance with underwriting governance and regulatory requirements. In addition to underwriting support responsibilities, you will be given authority to write some renewal business, making this a strong opportunity for an underwriting assistant who is looking to broaden their exposure and progress within underwriting operations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and administrative support to underwriters to enable effective negotiation of rates, terms, and conditions for new and existing business.
  • Take responsibility for a portion of renewal business within delegated authority, reviewing risk information and presenting findings to senior stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate underwriting data and documentation, ensuring compliance, audit readiness, and high operational standards.
  • Build and develop strong relationships with key stakeholders, including underwriters, brokers, and colleagues across the wider business.
  • Work with awareness of the annual business plan, supporting prioritisation and decision-making aligned to team objectives.
  • Adhere to underwriting standards, legal and regulatory requirements, and good practice to minimise risk and maximise efficiency.
  • Support market awareness by keeping up to date with trends and demonstrating understanding of market cycles.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of underwriting processes and service delivery.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in an underwriting support or underwriting assistant role.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage deadlines and competing priorities.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail, with a flexible approach to changing requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Interest in developing within underwriting operations and expanding responsibility over time.
  • Experience supporting casualty or commercial lines underwriting teams.
  • Experience handling renewals within delegated authority.
  • Familiarity with underwriting governance, compliance, and reporting requirements.
