Our client is seeking Senior Software Developers / Technical Leads (Contract) to support large-scale digital transformation programmes across government and commercial sectors. This role is suited to experienced contractors who enjoy working in agile, user-centred environments and take pride in building high-quality software the right way. You will work as part of multidisciplinary teams, contributing to discovery through to live services, while helping clients improve their technical capability and ways of working.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and deliver high-quality software solutions aligned to user and business needs.
  • Act as a senior technical contributor or technical lead within agile delivery teams.
  • Drive backlog refinement and technical decision-making within the team.
  • Define and implement testing strategies aligned with industry best practices.
  • Lead technical input during discovery phases and early solution shaping.
  • Promote clean code, test-driven development, pair programming, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate closely with stakeholders, positively challenge assumptions, and manage expectations.
  • Support and mentor other developers, leaving teams with improved capability and practices.

Technical Requirements

  • Strong commercial experience with Java and/or Scala (essential).
  • Proven experience in technical leadership or senior developer roles.
  • Deep understanding of software design principles, testing, accessibility, performance, and security.
  • Practical experience applying a range of testing tools and techniques.
  • Strong experience working within agile delivery environments.
  • Comfortable learning new technologies and operating as a T-shaped engineer.
  • Experience delivering digital services to UK Government standards.
  • Familiarity with the Government Digital Service (GDS) toolkit and service assessments.
  • Experience working in consultancy or client-facing delivery environments.

Security Requirements

Applicants must either hold active UK Security Clearance (SC) or meet eligibility criteria. Eligibility requires UK citizenship, continuous UK residence for the past five years, and no single absence exceeding 28 consecutive days.

Working Model

Hybrid working model combining home working, client sites, and office locations as required. Travel may be required depending on client and project needs.
