Our client is seeking an experienced and passionate Special Events Manager to lead volunteer engagement across a portfolio of large-scale public events and festival partnerships. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering impactful fundraising and supporter engagement initiatives while managing hundreds of volunteers across some of the UK's most recognised events. The successful candidate will oversee volunteer recruitment, training, safeguarding, welfare, and event operations, ensuring an exceptional experience for volunteers while supporting the delivery of high-profile events.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the recruitment, onboarding, training, and management of more than 700 volunteers across multiple events and festivals.
  • Develop and implement volunteer training programmes, safeguarding procedures, and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Coordinate volunteer scheduling, logistics, welfare arrangements, and operational planning.
  • Support the planning and delivery of large-scale special events and festival partnerships.
  • Manage teams of staff and volunteers on-site during events and festivals.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure all volunteer activities align with safeguarding, health and safety, and inclusion best practices.
  • Champion equity, diversity, inclusion, and volunteer wellbeing throughout all event activities.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of volunteer engagement strategies and event delivery processes.

Requirements

  • Proven experience recruiting, developing, motivating, and managing large volunteer teams within public events, festivals, or similar environments.
  • Strong experience implementing safeguarding and volunteer welfare practices within live event settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and support both volunteers and staff.
  • Experience coordinating complex operational plans involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills, including engagement with senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast‑paced, dynamic event environments.
  • Experience working within the charity, fundraising, community engagement, or not‑for‑profit sector.
  • Knowledge of volunteer engagement best practices and large‑scale event operations.
  • Legal right to work in the UK.
