The Events Manager is responsible for overseeing the annual calendar of events and supporting elected officers in completing manifesto goals in line with the strategic objectives. This role is hugely important in supporting the experience of students at University and ensuring a programme of events to reflect the diversity of the student membership. The Events Manager is also responsible for acting as a key contact for relevant staff within the University, including SEF and the Student Experience team and supporting a progressive partnership with the University.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible to: Deputy CEO
  • Responsible for: Events Coordinator, Nightlife Safety Advocates, Events Assistant (Grade 3), Student staff related to Events (15) grades 1-2
  • Budgetary Responsibility: Budget Headers: Freshers & Events
  • Responsibility Level: Budget Sign Off / Monitoring Spend
  • Level of Budget: £250,000
  • Level of Income: over 35% of budget

Area Responsibilities

  • Events Department, Freshers Week programme, Refreshers, Student Awards, One World Week, Nightlife Safety Advocate Scheme, Epik! Wednesdays
  • Oversee the Events Department, including line management support, budgets and operational plans working toward agreed targets and in line with strategic objectives.
  • Coordinate the calendar of events, particularly significant cultural and liberation periods.
  • Lead on Freshers, Refreshers, Student Awards, Fairs, the Nightlife Safety Advocate Scheme, supporting Student Union Elections, external relationships with the University and key clients (including Pryzm).
  • Responsible for risk assessments and contracts and ensuring licensed events are compliant, safe, profitable etc.
  • Work closely with the Activities Department to ensure Full Time Elected Officers are supported in achieving their manifestos and key priorities as it relates to Activities and Events.
  • Work with the Sports, Societies & Events Officer to make supporting students with their events a key priority.

Key Relationships

  • Responsible for maintaining good relationships with: Sussex students, elected officers, SU Colleagues, SU senior management, SU leadership team.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining good relationships with: Line Managers, direct reports (where applicable) and all colleagues across the Union.
  • Responsible for identifying, developing and maintaining good relationships with: Student groups (clubs, societies and campaigns) especially marginalised and hard to reach groups.
  • Relevant University of Sussex staff at all levels, including Health and Safety, Estates, Student Engagement Team, Sussex Sport and ACCA.
  • Sussex Estates & Facilities (SEF).
  • External stakeholders and suppliers relevant to the work of the Events Team (e.g. Pryzm, Brighton & Hove Licensing Team and all responsible authorities).

  • Undertake responsibility for key areas outlined, in a collaborative and supportive fashion.

  • Fulfil a signposting role for occasional students in distress.
  • Work within all Union policies and procedures at all times.
  • Take responsibility for all learning and development necessary to fulfil the post.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties in consultation with your line manager.
