Democratic Services Trainee: £26,835 to £29,093 per annum

Democratic Services Officer: £32,654 to £37,035 per annum

You will be directly responsible for the administration of a number of Committees and related bodies; undertake support, research and project work; and provide assistance for Elections and Electoral Services. You will also give information, support and advice to Councillors, officers and the public.

Democratic Services Officer / Trainee – Key Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for providing a comprehensive, professional and effective Member meetings administration service to designated Committees, other Member bodies

  • Be responsible for providing comprehensive, professional and effective committee support services

-The publication and maintenance on the Council’s website of relevant documents and information, including Agendas, reports and Minutes, in accordance with statutory requirements and the Council’s ICT Strategy/Policies

  • Assist in the delivery of Member Support functions, including the administration of the Members’ Allowances & ICT Schemes and Members’ Registration and Declaration of Interests and Gifts and Hospitality Schemes, and the provision of advice and guidance to Members in relation to these schemes

Good written, oral, interpersonal and IT skills

  • The ability to work effectively on you own initiative, under pressure and to tight deadlines

  • Good organisation and presentation skills

  • The ability to display tact and discretion while working with Councillors, officers at all levels, external partners/stakeholders, and the public

  • A flexible, proactive, customer-focused approach and ability to work effectively as part of a team

  • Education (or work experience) to at least A Level standard or equivalent

  • Valid Driving Licence

Requirements for the Democratic Services Officer:

  • Experience of committees/meetings administration, including the production of agendas; attendance at meetings; the preparation and publication of Minutes; and giving procedural advice to ensure compliance with good governance/democratic process

  • This would be particularly suitable for someone with Local Government/Public Sector experience, looking to develop their career

Appointments to a trainee post will usually be at the bottom of the lower grade, with progression subject to satisfactory performance, and further advancement to the higher grade subject to demonstration of the required competencies and completion of the ADSO qualification.
