I'm working exclusively on a Group Tax Manager role for a large healthcare provider, based in Sheffield. It's the first dedicated tax hire the business has made. Up to now tax has been shared between finance and external advisers. You'd be the one pulling it together.
The business is a large, established healthcare organisation with sites across England. It's growing and multi entity, with a sizeable property base. So the tax isn't just returns. Head office is in Sheffield, and you'd report to the Deputy CFO.
Responsibilities
- Owning corporation tax end to end: the computations, the returns, the payments and the cash tax forecasts
- Producing current and deferred tax numbers and the tax notes in the statutory accounts
- Keeping the group's tax calendar, so every return, claim, election and payment goes in on time
- Taking charge of employment taxes, including PAYE, benefits, expenses and IR35
- Looking after VAT and the other indirect taxes across the group
- Being the person HMRC deals with, including any enquiries
- Giving straight answers to finance, HR, payroll, property, legal and operations
- Getting involved early on deals, property, capital spend and restructuring
- Managing the external advisers and deciding when specialist help is worth paying for
- Tightening up processes and governance, and making sure the reliefs available are actually claimed
Requirements
- The person ACA, ACCA and/or CTA qualified
- Solid UK corporate tax, having prepared or reviewed computations and returns
- Tax accounting experience, including current and deferred tax and accounts disclosures
- Used to managing deadlines, payments and reporting without being chased
- Able to explain tax to people who aren't interested in tax, and get them to act on it
- Happy working on your own and building relationships across the business
- Practice or industry background. Either works

You'd be a team of one, at least to start. There's no tax department to lean on, and a lot of the work is hands on compliance alongside the advisory side. If you want to manage a team from day one, this isn't it. If you want to build something and be the person everyone comes to, it probably is.
