Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer β Mechanical Bias

Salary: Β£48,000 rising to Β£50,000
Shift: Fixed Nights β 4 on / 4 off, 6:00pmβ6:00am
Holidays: 25 days per annum
The Opportunity
I am currently recruiting for an experienced Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer β Mechanical Bias to join the engineering team at a busy manufacturing site in Millerdale.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an apprentice-trained or time-served engineer who enjoys a hands-on maintenance role and has strong mechanical skills, backed up by good electrical and pneumatic knowledge.
Working as part of a small and close-knit engineering team on a fixed 4-on, 4-off night shift, you will be responsible for keeping production equipment running safely and efficiently, carrying out planned and reactive maintenance, diagnosing breakdowns and supporting continuous improvement projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) across all production equipment.
- Respond quickly and effectively to breakdowns and equipment failures.
- Diagnose faults and identify root causes to prevent repeat breakdowns.
- Provide front-line engineering support to manufacturing and production teams.
- Monitor plant and equipment condition, identifying potential issues before they develop into failures.
- Complete maintenance work accurately and to a high standard, with a Right First Time approach.
- Carry out mechanical repairs, adjustments and modifications.
- Support engineering projects, installations and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist with the management and supervision of contractors when required.
- Ensure contractors comply with site Health & Safety, GMP and company procedures.
- Complete stores requisitions for engineering parts and services.
- Maintain accurate records and detailed logs of all maintenance activities using company systems.
- Work closely with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Shift Managers and Production teams.
- Ensure all maintenance activities are carried out in accordance with Health & Safety, Quality and Engineering procedures.
- Take an active role in developing your engineering knowledge and skills through training and continuous development.
The Equipment & Engineering Environment
The successful candidate will ideally have experience working with a combination of mechanical, electrical and pneumatic manufacturing equipment, with exposure to:
- Packaging and bagging machinery
- Multihead weighers
- Checkweighers β including equipment such as Martini, Yamato, Multipond or Ishida
- Gearboxes, bearings and mechanical drives
- Pneumatic systems and components
- Single and three-phase electrical systems
- Three-phase motors and VFDs/inverters
- Contactors, relays, transformers and SMPS
- Control panels and wiring
- Basic PLC fault finding
- General production and manufacturing machinery
Mechanical Skills
As this is a mechanically biased position, strong mechanical engineering skills are essential.
Experience in the following would be highly advantageous:
- Mechanical fault finding and repair
- Bearings and gearboxes
- Pneumatics
- Bench fitting
- Metal fabrication
- Welding β MIG/TIG
- Using hand tools, drills, grinders and workshop equipment
- Fabricating or modifying simple machine parts
- Working from measurements, drawings or specifications
- General machinery repairs and modifications
Electrical Skills
You don't need to be an electrical specialist, but you should have a good working knowledge of electrical maintenance and be confident carrying out basic electrical fault finding, including:
- Single and three-phase systems
- Motors
- VFDs
- Relays and contactors
- Transformers
- SMPS
- Wiring harnesses
- Control panels
- Basic PLC fault finding
About You
- Apprentice trained, Level 3 qualified or time-served/equivalent.
- Experienced within a manufacturing, production or FMCG environment.
- Strong mechanically, with good electrical and pneumatic knowledge.
- Experienced in both PPM and reactive/breakdown maintenance.
- A confident fault finder who looks beyond the immediate problem to identify root cause.
- Practical and hands-on, with good mechanical repair and fabrication skills.
- Able to work independently while also contributing effectively to a small engineering team.
- Comfortable working under pressure and responding to production-critical breakdowns.
- Safety-conscious with a strong understanding of engineering and site procedures.
- A logical thinker who can find practical solutions to unexpected production problems.
- Committed to delivering a high-quality, Right First Time standard of work.
