Overview
As a Senior Look Development Technical Director, you will shape the look of CG assets from initial direction to final shading, working closely with Lighting and CG Supervisors to deliver high-quality results.
You’ll design efficient shader setups to optimize render farm usage and maintain consistent material libraries for pipeline efficiency.
You’ll develop complex shading networks for hero assets and collaborate across texture and groom teams to achieve the desired visuals.
This role combines hands-on technical work with creative problem-solving in a collaborative VFX environment.

Responsibilities
- Design and create the look of CG objects and scenes
- Collaborate with Lighting Supervisors and CG Supervisors to determine approaches for CG challenges
- Create efficient shader setups to optimize render farm usage
- Manage and maintain standard material libraries using shading templates
- Design, implement, and maintain complex shading networks and materials for hero assets
- Submit a demo reel or equivalent showcasing work (as part of application)
- Deliver high-quality assets within production deadlines
- Understand and support multiple departments (FX, Texture, Groom, Lighting) to ensure cohesive results
- Ability to pick up new techniques and learn new software quickly
- Key requirements
- Experience creating hero assets and props in Look Development
- Experience with lighting and rendering in a VFX environment
- Knowledge of real-world materials
- Proficiency in asset optimization
- Comprehensive knowledge of physically based rendering and shader models
- Ability to collaborate with texture and groom artists
- Strong grasp of geometry formatting (Primvars)
- Ability to build and maintain complex shading networks with a user-friendly interface
- Ability to triage technical issues and resolve lookdev challenges
- Understanding of the VFX pipeline from modelling to compositing
- Proven ability to work on large-scale environments
- Knowledge of Katana essential; Houdini and Maya beneficial
- Solid understanding of unbiased rendering systems (e. g., Renderman)
- Aesthetic eye and proactive problem anticipation
- Ability to manage multiple assets in a shot context
- Team-oriented and time-management focused
