Job Summary
ESPN is looking for atalenteddigital editorto lead news coverage from the UK and drive the growth of ESPN’s digital properties in EMEA. With a formidable background in sports news, excellent digital skills, a deep understanding of SEO, digital analytics and an extensive knowledge of football, the candidate will play a vital role in overseeing our day-to-day news operation.
Candidates will have impressive existing experience of working in a digital sports news environment and must possess an outstanding news sense across a range of sports, especially football and F1. They will bring urgency, drive and leadership skills, and instinctively understand which sports stories will resonate across digital platforms.
Candidates will work in a dynamic environment, with the ability to make an important impact on ESPN’s future production.
The Opportunity & Responsibilities:
- Lead ESPN’s digital news output out of the UK on a daily basis, always ensuring the right stories are prioritised
- Work with ESPN’s reporters to deliver the strongest news lines for a UK audience
- Set clear digital publishing guidelines toensure the right blend, timing and volume of content to meet the ESPN mission to Serve Sports Fans. Anytime. Anywhere.
- Demonstrate the ability to be lead day-to-day coverage while also working on longer term strategic projects across a range of sports
- Effectively and decisively communicate with the wider global team, ensuring optimum distribution of key content and breaking news
- Use data to inform decision-making at all times
- Show a collaborative approach across ESPN teams locally and globally, including social media and broadcast
- Be comfortable working multiple weekends, late nights and flexible hours, with most shifts being based at our London offices in Hammersmith
- Identify stories that will resonate with our audience and look for the most creative angles to tell them
- Regularly lead key editorial meetings, ensuring the team operates in an efficient and urgent manner at all times
- Coordinate staffing assignments, editorial resources and processes
- Champion ESPN\’s approach to diversity and inclusion
The Experience We Require From You:
- Experience of working in a busy digital news environment
- Excellent sports knowledge, with a strong focus on football
- Expertise in SEO, digital publishing and the ability to use metrics to drive audience growth
- Creative mindset and ability to look to new avenues and formats for the distribution of content
- Highest standards of written English, excellent editing skills, top-class attention to detail and a talent for finding and demanding the strongest news lines
- Great communication skills; picking up the phone should come naturally to you
- Able to work legally in the United Kingdom
Preferred Qualifications :
- Experience of supervising or managing other members of staff
- Experience of working with reporters in a highly competitive, rapidly changing environment
- The ability to speak a second language
