Join the National Gallery and play a key role in leading a world-class visitor experience and excellent on-site operations at one of the nation’s iconic sites. The National Gallery houses the national collection of paintings in the Western European tradition, spanning the 13th to the 19th centuries. The Gallery’s mission is to ensure people can engage with great art, offering its collection on show 361 days a year, free of charge.
The Gallery Manager is a pivotal, floor-based role responsible for ensuring the Gallery’s daily operations run smoothly. You will ensure the Gallery is fit for purpose before opening and manage operational hours through effective safety, capacity, cleaning, and queue management.
- Operational Management: Providing daily onsite management of activities, including oversight of VIP visits and special events.
- Incident Response: Acting as the primary point of contact for incidents and emergency evacuations and investigating health and safety-related issues.
- Exhibition Planning: Advising on and executing crowd control, capacity, and queue management for exhibitions.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Consulting regularly with internal teams—including Hosts, Security, Catering, and Buildings—and external stakeholders like emergency services and TFL.
- Service Improvement: Identifying areas for improvement and delivering best-practice training to teams across the Gallery and third-party contractors.
- Complaints Resolution: Serving as the final point of escalation for visitor complaints and operational concerns.
This role requires regular weekend and evening work on a rota basis. The National Gallery is looking for a resilient, adaptable, and personable leader who can remain calm under pressure.
