We are looking for an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) to join our Mobility Centre team and play a key role in delivering services that make a real difference to the communities we serve. Disability Action Mobility Centre assessment service offers driving and passenger assessments, as well as expert advice on driving and vehicle adaptations for disabled and older individuals in Belfast and across 8 satellite sites throughout Northern Ireland.

In this role, you will conduct fitness to drive assessments to people with a disability throughout Northern Ireland in people's own vehicles, suitably adapted vehicles (when required) or in dual controlled vehicles. We will provide training to work alongside occupational therapists (OT) to conduct these assessments and to provide expert support to clients and contribute to the development of services and enhanced client experiences. The successful candidate will report directly to the Mobility Centre Manager. This is an exciting opportunity to grow your expertise while supporting our mission to create a more inclusive society.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work in a team with an OT to conduct driving assessments in 9 locations throughout Northern Ireland in manual/automatic/adapted car/dual controlled.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times, adhering to GDPR and data protection standards in all communications and processes.
  • Provide clear advice and guidance to drivers demonstrating strong communication skills to enable continued safe driving, retraining or learning to drive.
  • Where necessary deliver difficult news, clearly, empathically and respectfully.
  • Communicate effectively with service users, their families, health professionals, and support workers as required.
  • Apply road safety expertise during assessments, ensuring individuals' safety in various driving conditions.
  • Contribute actively to staff meetings and engage in ongoing personal development to enhance skills and knowledge in driving assessments and related services.
  • Produce reports and maintain working records, ensuring accuracy and up-to-date documentation.
  • Utilise IT tools, including MS Word, to efficiently manage records and create reports.
  • Show empathy with a caring approach towards service users and their families, understanding their unique needs.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of services in line with the needs of service users and stakeholders.
  • Perform any additional duties necessary to fulfil the requirements of the position.
  • Undertake training to conduct fitness to drive assessments in collaboration with clinicians and our assessors to evaluate the ability of individuals, especially those with health-related conditions or disabilities, to drive safely.

Essential Criteria

  • DVA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) with a proven track record in driving instruction minimum grade 4.
  • Minimum of 3 years recent/relevant tuition experience.

Skills and Competencies

  • Experience or a strong willingness to work with individuals with disabilities or health-related conditions affecting their ability to drive.
  • Knowledge of road safety.
  • Proficiency in IT systems, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Strong organisational skills with attention to detail in data entry and record-keeping.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.

  • Experience/knowledge in vehicle adaptations and knowledge of road safety.
  • Recognised training qualifications.
