Role Overview: A Cardiac Scrub Nurse is a highly skilled theatre practitioner responsible for providing specialist perioperative care within cardiac surgery. The role focuses on maintaining a sterile environment, supporting the surgical team, and ensuring safe, efficient delivery of complex cardiac procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and maintain a sterile field for cardiac surgical procedures
  • Scrub and assist during cardiac operations (e.g. CABG, valve replacements, thoracic procedures)
  • Ensure all surgical instruments, equipment, and consumables are available, checked, and functioning correctly
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and wider theatre team during procedures
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols at all times
  • Support patient safety through accurate instrument counts and documentation
  • Work collaboratively with: Surgeons, Anaesthetists, ODPs, Circulating staff
  • Participate in pre- and post-operative care processes
  • Respond effectively in emergency or high-pressure situations
  • Maintain compliance with clinical governance and NHS standards

Key Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of cardiac surgical procedures and instrumentation
  • Excellent understanding of aseptic technique
  • Ability to anticipate surgical needs proactively

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse (RGN) with valid Nursing and Midwifery Council registration or qualified Operating Department Practitioner (ODP)
  • Proven experience as a Scrub Nurse within cardiac theatres (essential)
  • Minimum 12 months NHS experience required
  • Up-to-date mandatory training and compliance
  • Flexibility to work day shifts. Nights and Weekends may be available
