St Ignatius Church is seeking a dedicated and reliable Sacristan to support the smooth running of our liturgical services and maintain the sacred environment of our church.
Working closely with the Parish Priest, you will play a vital role in preparing for Mass and other liturgical celebrations, ensuring that all services are conducted with reverence, care, and attention to detail. This is an important and fulfilling role that contributes directly to the spiritual life of the parish community.
Key Responsibilities- Liturgical & Sacramental Support
- Prepare the altar and all necessary items for Mass and liturgical celebrations
- Support baptisms, confirmations, Holy Communion, and anointing services
- Assist with funerals and weddings, including preparing liturgical items
- Care of Sacred Items
- Maintain and clean vessels, vestments, and liturgical equipment
- Monitor stock and order supplies (e.g. candles, hosts, altar wine)
- Refill holy water fonts and ensure items are in good condition
- Church & Sacristy Organisation
- Keep the sacristy clean, organised, and ready for use
- Coordinate seasonal decorations and floral arrangements with volunteers
- Oversee the altar servers’ sacristy and ensure vestments are cared for
- Coordination & Administration
- Work closely with clergy, staff, and volunteers
- Help maintain the schedule of services and events
- Arrange laundering of altar linens
- Additional Duties
- Support Eucharistic Adoration (including exposing and reposing the Blessed Sacrament where appropriate)
- Handle Sunday collections and candle donations in line with procedures
- Good knowledge of the liturgical calendar
- Familiarity with sacristy items and church practices
- Reliable, organised, and punctual
- Flexible approach to working hours
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a range of people
- Basic computer skills
- Experience working in a faith-based or charitable setting is welcome but not essential.
This role requires an up-to-date DBS check (or willingness to obtain one) and completion of relevant safeguarding training.
