Role Summary: The Historic Church Buildings Support Officer will support Parochial Church Councils (PCCs) and other stakeholders within the Diocese of Chelmsford to care for their historic church buildings through appropriate maintenance, management and repair. A key element of the role is identifying and supporting applications to funding streams to support works on church buildings, their contents and churchyards.
Context: The Diocese of Chelmsford is vibrant and growing with 470 parishes and 144 schools. It currently has 576 church buildings, 401 of which are listed (173 Grade I, 145 Grade II*, 83 Grade II), many of which are architecturally and historically significant.
Responsibilities:
- Support PCCs and other stakeholders in the care and management of historic church buildings.
- Identify funding opportunities and assist applicants with grant applications for works on church buildings, contents and churchyards.
- Work closely with the Service Delivery Team, Historic England and other partners to deliver effective maintenance and repair programmes.
- Collaborate with volunteers, building owners and wider community groups to implement improvement projects.
Qualifications:
- Background in heritage management, conservation of historic buildings or architecture.
- Knowledge of church buildings and their maintenance is essential.
- Experience of funding and grant applications.
- Excellent and innovative problem‑solving skills and experience working with building owners, volunteers and wider community groups (advantage).
