Make a meaningful difference with Dimensions
At Dimensions, we believe people with learning disabilities and autism should have the opportunity to live happy, fulfilling lives with choice and independence. We're looking for a compassionate and resilient Female Support Worker to join our team in Darlington, supporting a lady and gentleman in their 50s and 60s to live life their way.
This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about person-centred support and enjoys helping people achieve the things that are important to them.
Gender is considered to be a genuine occupational requirement in accordance with Schedule 9, Paragraph 1 of the Equality Act 2010. In this context, "gender" refers to the sex legally assigned to an individual.
Who will you be supporting?
You will be supporting two people with autism, learning disabilities and associated health needs who enjoy living active and fulfilling lives.
Their interests include:
- Shopping trips
- Days at the beach
- Music, shows and cinema visits
- Going to the pub
- Visiting museums
- Eating out and socialising
The gentleman you will be supporting does not communicate using words, but he has his own unique ways of expressing his needs, preferences and choices. Building an understanding of how he communicates will be an important part of the role. If you haven't supported someone who communicates in this way before, don't worry, as full training and ongoing support will be provided.
About the role
As a Female Support Worker, you'll be supporting people both at home and in the community, helping them maintain their independence while achieving their personal goals.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing person-centred support tailored to individual needs
- Understanding and responding to individual communication styles
- Providing emotional reassurance and consistent support
- Supporting with daily living activities, including cooking, shopping and managing finances
- Providing personal care when required
- Supporting community activities and social outings
- Administering and recording medication in line with protocols
- Following support plans, risk assessments and health plans
- Promoting independence, wellbeing, dignity and choice
- Building positive relationships based on trust and consistency
You will be expected to work in line with individual support plans and adopt a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approach at all times.
Experience and qualities we're looking for
Previous experience is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided. However, we would particularly welcome applications from candidates who have experience supporting people who:
- Display behaviours of distress
- May engage in self-injurious behaviours
- Have complex support needs
You will be:
- Calm, patient and resilient
- Confident following support plans and PBS strategies
- Comfortable supporting people who communicate in different ways
- Comfortable working with risk assessments and medication protocols
- Able to provide consistent, person-centred support
- Passionate about promoting independence and positive outcomes
- A strong team player with excellent communication skills
Experience of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and PRN protocols would be advantageous.
Shift Patterns
This is a part‑time role working 32 hours per week on a mixture of shifts including:
- 08:00am - 11:00pm plus sleep‑in
- 07:30am - 08:00pm
- 08:00am - 09:00pm
Flexibility is essential as the service operates across a variety of shift patterns.
Driving Requirement
As the people we support have their own vehicles, it is essential that applicants hold a full UK/EU manual driving licence and are confident driving in the community.
