Microvascular disease underlies some of the world's biggest healthcare challenges, including kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, vascular dementia, and septic shock. At Dimension Biotechnologies, we're making it detectable with a routine blood test. We are a spinout from University of Bristol’s world-leading microvascular and kidney research group Bristol Renal and are based in the Science Creates deep-tech ecosystem in Bristol. We are looking for a full-time Senior Scientist to join our team and help lead the development of our glycocalyx sensing technology.
The role
You will develop our glycocalyx sensors – rapid assays that monitor microvascular health by quantifying the endothelial glycocalyx. This will build on the groundwork laid by our founding team. Alongside this, you will analyse samples from academic, clinical, and industry partners as part of ongoing projects to validate our technology in different application areas. Overall, you will play a leading role in the development and testing of biosensors that unlock completely new biology for tracking human health and disease, ultimately helping deliver these tests to patients.
Responsibilities
- Designing, planning and executing robust experiments, and keeping accurate records
- Analysing and interpreting data and presenting data in a clear and concise fashion at regular company meetings and to external collaborators
- Inputting intellectually to all ongoing R&D projects as part of regular team discussions
- Assisting with the management of our R&D lab
Skills & experience
We are looking for scientists with a PhD (or equivalent experience of conducting self-driven research in industry) in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Cell Biology, or a related discipline. A background in one or more of the following key areas would be a distinct advantage:
- Endothelial cell biology
- Vascular biology
- Glycobiology/glycochemistry
- Sugar sensing
- Red blood cell biology
Overall, we are keen to receive applications from ambitious, and energetic individuals with a passion for translating research into real-world applications and impact for patients.
Other essential characteristics:
- Extensive practical laboratory experience
- A demonstrable ability to innovate
- A team player who is open to learning and motivated by self-growth
- An ability to be collaborative and to manage partnerships with third parties
- An ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of different stakeholders
Desirable skill sets:
- Fluorescence microscopy or other related imaging techniques
- Lectin and/or antibody-based assays, or other glycan quantification assays
- Cell culture (particularly endothelial cell culture)
- Handling and analysis of human samples (particularly whole blood)
- Experience of GLP, GMP and/or GCLP
Eligibility and expectations
In order to qualify for this position, you must be authorised to live and work in the UK. If you are applying from outside of the UK, you must state in your cover letter your right to work status e.g., UK citizen, EU Settlement Scheme, other.
Most of the job is expected to take place in Dimension’s dedicated laboratory space at Science Creates St Philips, Albert Road, Bristol, BS2 0XJ, and occasionally at University of Bristol. The role may also involve short visits to other organisations in the UK and abroad, with the potential for occasional overnight stays.
