We have a vacancy for a health care assistant with Phlebotomy experience to join our friendly team in this large GP practice. Working mornings we are flexible and open to a discussion about days and hours.
Main duties of the job:
- Phlebotomy duties, stock maintenance and clinical supplies, run coagulation clinics, ECGs, BP and testing samples to support the nursing team.
About us:
We are a large GP practice with 4 sites in South Hertfordshire and approximately 50,000 patients. Our staff team is very friendly and cohesive and you will be made to feel very welcome. We do not mind what your HCA background is but it would be helpful to have GP practice experience.
Job responsibilities:
The purpose of the role is to assist the GPs and nursing team in the service and delivery of health care of the practice population. The post holder will work under supervision of the nursing team and undertake tasks/duties delegated appropriately. The post holder will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet patient needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- To prepare consulting rooms and maintain stocks of examination instruments and specimen collection materials.
- To maintain vaccine stock levels and stock rotation as agreed with the practice nurses.
- To maintain and order drugs, instruments and clinical supplies.
- To collect blood samples from patients as requested by Health care professionals, by means of venepuncture, skin puncture or other approved methods.
- To ensure that patient identification details are checked on every patient before the venepuncture procedure is performed.
- To ensure correct labelling of sample tubes with patient details and the correlation of request forms with samples.
- To run Anticoagulation Clinics.
- Appropriate dressing changes.
- To correctly store instruments.
- To take and record blood pressures using templates as requested by the doctors and nurses.
- To perform ECGs as required.
- Patient care duties including blood pressures, ECGs, new patient screening, stitch removal, 24hr BP fit/download, smoking cessation, ear syringe, NHS health checks, flu, well person checks and h pylori tests.
- Assisting with minor operations clinics.
- To test urine specimens using appropriate equipment and record as requested.
- To perform other clinical tasks as trained and agreed to meet the needs of the practice.
- To perform any other task within the skills of the post holder.
General:
- Maintain any required registrations and certifications necessary to fulfil your role.
- To promote a professional approach at all times by dress and attitude to patients and staff, both in and out of the Practice, setting an example for those under your direct authority and to the team as a whole.
- To maintain your own continuous CPD and ensure a PDP is kept up to date in line with the practice and nursing team development plans.
- To participate in and attend practice meetings and in-house training.

- Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills.
- Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards.
- Reporting potential risks identified.
