The British Museum is seeking a Librarian to join the Collection Projects and Resources department. The librarian has specific responsibility for the library collection in the departments Egypt & Sudan, Middle East and Greece & Rome but the main purpose of this role is to work as part of a team responsible for managing the Museum library collection and facilitating access for staff and external users. The postholder is responsible for supporting the management of print and digital resources across the Museum’s libraries and the delivery of high quality, customer-focussed library and heritage services including user education, cataloguing and appraisal.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Be responsible for the operational management of library collections, as defined by the Senior Librarian, and act as first point of contact for research enquiries.
  • Identify and evaluate collection material with an understanding of Open Access requirements, print and e-resource needs.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders to manage acquisition, subscription, retention, conservation and disposal of material.
  • Catalogue library material in a library management system (currently Koha) using multiple classifications systems.
  • Communicate, consult and liaise with stakeholders across the Museum to identify, scope and deliver projects related to collection development, the Koha library management system, reader services, facilities and communications.
  • Facilitate access to the library and library resources for staff and the public including service point delivery.
  • Support the development of user education services including guidance, induction and training on the resources and use of the Museum library and digital resources in collaboration with the HR training team.
  • Budget management and oversight of financial processing as required.
  • Assess, manage and deliver any preservation or conservation requirements within the collection.
  • Development of volunteer placements and the recruitment, training and management of volunteers.
  • Liaise with international stakeholders and act as the library’s representative, as appropriate, including donors, research funders and partners.
  • Line-management as required.
  • Undertake any other relevant tasks as required.
