We’re looking for a Senior PHP Developer to join an established business with technology sitting at the heart of its operation. You’ll help modernise a business-critical digital platform, moving away from legacy code and contributing to the development of a cleaner, more scalable PHP and Laravel-based architecture. This is a hands-on development role, but you’ll also have the opportunity to influence technical direction, improve engineering standards and work closely with teams across the wider business.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Building and maintaining high-quality PHP and Laravel applications
  • Helping modernise legacy systems and develop a future-proof platform
  • Developing internal tools used across the business
  • Working alongside backend developers, frontend developers, UX, UI and content teams
  • Contributing to architecture and the wider technology strategy
  • Writing clean, tested and maintainable code
  • Reviewing code and sharing knowledge across the development team
  • Improving CI/CD, deployment processes and development standards

What we’re looking for:

  • Strong commercial experience with PHP and Laravel
  • Good knowledge of MVC-based frameworks and MySQL
  • Experience working with legacy systems and modernisation projects
  • Understanding of HTML5 and CSS
  • AWS and Linux experience
  • Exposure to Terraform or other Infrastructure as Code tools
  • Experience with GitHub Actions, CI/CD and automated deployments
  • A test-driven approach to development
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills

You’ll suit this role if you’re careful, organised and take pride in producing well-engineered software. The team values high standards, collaboration and practical decision-making rather than unnecessary complexity.

How to prepare for a job interview at Digital Gurus

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Digital Gurus uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
