The Role
As Senior Health and Safety Advisor, you'll play a leading role in developing, implementing, and maintaining health and safety frameworks across the organisation. You'll be a trusted advisor to managers and stakeholders at all levels, drawing on your experience of working within local authority environments to navigate the unique challenges and requirements that come with the role. Experience of the education sector or public sector would be a distinct advantage.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing expert health and safety advice and guidance to managers, staff, and senior stakeholders across the organisation
- Developing, reviewing, and implementing health and safety policies, procedures, and risk assessments
- Conducting site inspections, audits, and investigations, producing clear and actionable reports and recommendations
- Leading on incident investigation and ensuring appropriate corrective actions are identified and implemented
- Supporting the delivery of health and safety training programmes across the organisation
- Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation including the Health and Safety at Work Act, CDM Regulations, and associated statutory requirements
- Building strong working relationships with internal teams, external contractors, and regulatory bodies including the HSE
- Keeping up to date with changes in health and safety legislation and best practice, particularly within local authority and educational settings
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience as a Health and Safety Advisor or Senior Advisor, with a strong background working within a local authority environment
- Experience within the education sector — schools, colleges, or similar — is highly desirable
- NEBOSH National General Certificate as a minimum — NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent Level 6 qualification is preferred
- Membership of IOSH (TechIOSH or CMIOSH) is advantageous
- Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and its application in complex, multi-site environments
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to advise and challenge at all levels
- A proactive, solutions-focused approach with strong report writing and analytical skills
- Based in or within commuting distance of London
