Application Support Specialist

The Role

As Application Support Engineer, you'll play a key role in ensuring the stability, performance, and reliability of a sophisticated data platform. You'll be the go-to technical expert for application support issues, working closely with development, infrastructure, and operations teams to diagnose and resolve problems quickly and effectively. This is a hands-on role that requires strong Linux experience and solid Python skills; someone who is equally comfortable investigating a complex technical issue as they are scripting a solution to prevent it from happening again.

Key Responsibilities

• Providing application support for a leading data platform, taking ownership of incidents, problems, and service requests through to resolution.
• Diagnosing and troubleshooting complex technical issues across Linux-based environments, identifying root causes and implementing effective fixes.
• Writing, maintaining, and optimising Python scripts to automate processes, improve system performance, and support operational efficiency.
• Monitoring platform health and performance, proactively identifying and addressing potential issues before they impact the business.
• Working closely with development and infrastructure teams to manage releases, deployments, and configuration changes.
• Producing clear and accurate technical documentation including runbooks, incident reports, and knowledge base articles.
• Liaising with internal stakeholders and third-party vendors to manage and resolve technical issues effectively.
• Contributing to the continuous improvement of support processes, tools, and practices.

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience in an application support, systems support, or similar technical role.
• Strong, hands-on Linux experience essential; comfortable working in the command line, managing processes, and troubleshooting system-level issues.
• Solid Python scripting skills able to write, read, and maintain scripts to support automation and problem resolution.
• Experience supporting data platforms, data pipelines, or similar data-focused technical environments is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with monitoring and alerting tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Nagios, or similar.
• Experience with SQL and database troubleshooting is advantageous.
• A methodical, analytical approach to problem solving with strong attention to detail.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical issues clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Based within commuting distance of Aylesbury or Milton Keynes for hybrid working requirements.
