About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK's national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Our scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology. We are currently in the early phase of a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.

About the Role

At a very exciting time for Diamond Light Source, we have created a new senior position for a Head of Electrical Engineering, to be responsible for the LV Electrical Engineering distribution across the Diamond accelerators and beamlines, including design, installation, testing and maintenance and safety aspects, reporting to the Head of Engineering.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Management of safety aspects of the accelerator and beamline LV systems, including compliance with legislation for electrical and functional safety.
  • Developing the electrical engineering profession within the Engineering Group.
  • Providing a high level of technical knowledge and advice on electrical systems, including analysis of cable routing, cable de-rating and voltage drop, radiation effects on wiring and electrical components, protection requirements, rack cooling and thermal management, and O2 depletion systems.
  • Delivery of new electrical systems, with direct management of the accelerator electrical engineering team and oversight of the beamline electrical engineering teams.
  • Overseeing recruitment, training and management of electrical staff.
  • Supporting the Head of Electrical Facilities as a Senior Authorised Persons Electrical (SAPe), responsible for activities in relations to the distribution network, competence assessment and vetting to authorise others throughout Diamond.
  • Managing electrical fault analysis and improvement programmes.
