You will be trusted to take ownership of complex instructions, contribute to technical decision-making, and provide clear, practical advice aligned to UK regulations and best practice. Working under the direction of the Director of Fire Safety, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team across fire engineering, surveying and project delivery. This is a role for someone who enjoys technical depth, professional autonomy and work that genuinely matters.
ROLE EXPECTATIONS
This role requires strong fire engineering judgement, the ability to work independently, and a clear understanding of the UK regulatory framework across both England and Scotland. You will be expected to deliver consistently high-quality fire strategies and associated technical outputs, contribute to façade and remediation advisory work, and support HRB-related projects including safety case and regulatory engagement where required. You will also play an active role in mentoring junior engineers and supporting internal QA and technical development.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
You will be successful in this role if:
- Your fire strategies are technically robust, clearly written and defensible.
- Your advice is practical and proportionate, not tick-box.
- You manage multiple instructions confidently and deliver on time.
- Clients and stakeholders trust your judgement and communication.
- You raise technical standards within the team through mentoring and QA input.
HOW YOU'LL SPEND MOST OF YOUR TIME
Most weeks, you will be:
- Developing fire strategies from RIBA Stage 2-6 for residential and mixed-use buildings.
- Reviewing designs against Approved Document B, Scottish Technical Handbooks and relevant British Standards.
- Supporting façade fire risk analysis and remediation advisory work, including PAS 9980-aligned reviews.
- Contributing to HRB projects under the Building Safety Act 2022.
- Supporting regulatory submissions and engagement (including Gateway exposure where applicable).
- Reviewing smoke control strategies, cause and effect matrices and supporting documentation.
- Producing clear technical reports and communicating findings to clients and project teams.
- Mentoring and supporting graduate engineers and contributing to internal QA.
WHO THIS ROLE IS FOR
This role suits someone who:
- Has a strong grounding in fire dynamics, structural fire engineering principles and compliance-led design.
- Has experience delivering residential fire strategies (new build and/or retrospective).
- Understands the requirements and expectations for Higher-Risk Buildings.
- Can work independently, manage priorities and deliver consistently high-quality outputs.
- Is confident communicating technical advice to clients, design teams and internal stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
You must meet one of the following qualification routes:
- Route A) MSc/MEng Fire Engineering (accredited) + 3+ years relevant experience + AIFireE.
- Route B) BEng/BSc in a relevant engineering discipline + MSc/MEng Fire Engineering (in progress/committed) + 5+ years relevant experience + AIFireE.
You must also have working knowledge of Building Regulations / Approved Document B, Scottish Technical Handbooks, BS 9991/9999 and PAS 9980.
Desirable: MIFireE, CEng, Gateway 2 exposure, façade remediation advisory experience, strong client-facing technical ownership.
EXPERIENCE THAT HELPS
HRB portfolio exposure and compliance-led delivery, strong report writing and stakeholder communication, ability to review complex design information and identify practical risk solutions, experience working in consultancy environments with multiple concurrent instructions.
WHAT WE OFFER
Competitive salary, aligned to experience, flexible working, with UK-wide project exposure (role dependent), 25 days holiday + bank holidays, plus Christmas closure, private healthcare (after probation) + employee assistance programme, life assurance (3x salary), fully funded training and professional development, support with APC, CPD and professional qualifications, employee perks (Spectrum Life + Extras), Cycle to Work and free eye tests, referral scheme + staff social events.
