Senior Lawyer (Prosecutions) to undertake the full range of legal casework activities including drafting, negotiating, research, analysis, advice, case preparation, case administration, inquiries and tribunals, instructing counsel, and, where the role is a litigation role, to undertake litigation and/or advocacy. Support colleagues and clients, provide practical advice, and ensure client care and regular updates.

Responsibilities

  • Handle a caseload of complex and/or politically sensitive legal matters with minimal supervision, ensuring good governance arrangements are in place to support effective decision making.

Qualifications (Essential)

  • GCSE Grade (or equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics.
  • Qualified Solicitor of England and Wales, Barrister, CILEX, or equivalent.
  • At least 3 years' post-qualification experience.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook), social media familiarity.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience (Criteria for Shortlisting)

  • Experience in providing informal coaching, supervision, or support.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to negotiate, draft complex legal documentation, and advise under time pressure while meeting deadlines; demonstrates an innovative, problem-solving approach to legal issues.
  • Experience working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of local government law, practice, and procedure, and public administrative law.
  • Experience dealing with members within a local authority context.
  • Understanding and implementation of corporate/departmental people practices.
  • Ability to recommend service improvements based on relevant data.
  • Effective communication with elected members and stakeholders.
  • Constructive collaboration with partner organizations and internal colleagues.
  • Experience providing legal services to colleagues, maintained schools, and local authority trading companies.
