Job Description Senior Electrical Design Engineer Controls & AutomationDaventry, Northamptonshire | £55,000£65,000A well-established UK engineering and manufacturing business is looking to appoint a Senior Electrical Design Engineer as part of an exciting stage in the development of its engineering function.
Initially this will be a highly hands-on electrical design position to ensure consistency and accuracy to support the manufacturing process. You will take a lead role in the design of electrical control systems, working closely with the company's manufacturing operation and top leadership.
The longer-term opportunity is considerably broader. As you establish yourself within the business, the intention is for you to take increasing ownership of the engineering function to free the founder to focus on strategy and R&D. You will forge the engineering standards, processes and people including recruiting your team around you.
For an accomplished electrical design engineer / senior electrical design engineer who would like to progress into engineering leadership without giving up the technical work immediately, this offers a fantastic opportunity to do so, working in a family owned business directly with the CEO and founder.
The roleInitially, the majority of your time will be spent on electrical design, including: Electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and control panel layoutsDesign and specification of electrical control systemsProducing and maintaining BOMs, drawings and associated technical documentationReviewing designs and ensuring appropriate engineering standards are maintainedWorking closely with Manufacturing to ensure designs are practical, accurate and efficient to buildLiaising with R&D, Purchasing and other functions throughout the design and manufacturing processIdentifying opportunities to improve engineering methods, standards and documentationAs the role develops, you will take greater responsibility for the engineering function itself, including supporting and mentoring other engineers, building out your team and establishing effective engineering processes and standards.
About youWe are looking for a Senior Electrical Design Engineer with a strong background in industrial controls.
HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or equivalent experienceStrong experience designing industrial electrical control systemsExcellent electrical schematic, wiring diagram and control panel design capabilityExperience working in an engineering/manufacturing environment where your designs ultimately become physical productsGood understanding of electrical components and their application within control systemsExperience using an electrical CAD package such as SolidWorks Electrical, EPLAN or AutoCAD ElectricalThe confidence to take ownership of technical decisions and contribute ideas for improving the engineering functionExperience with PLC-controlled equipment would be useful, although this is primarily an electrical design rather than PLC programming position.
Relevant backgrounds could include industrial automation, special-purpose machinery, material handling/conveyors, process equipment, food & beverage, water, HVAC or other controls-led manufacturing environments.

This appointment forms part of a wider investment in its engineering capability. Longer term, the intention is to build additional engineering capability around the successful person and for the position to evolve from senior electrical design engineer towards a management role and potentially Head of Engineering.
