Purpose of the Role

Lead the technical solution design, delivery, operation and secure release for Diageo's many consumer-facing websites — including Guinness Storehouse, Johnnie Walker, Baileys, The Bar, Malts and many more — ensuring they are delivered efficiently, operated effectively and continuously improved. Support platform performance, stability and compliance to enable strong consumer experiences. This is a hands‑on, technical product leadership role: you will turn the product roadmap set by the Head of Websites Product into the right technical design, the right squad and the fastest, safe path to live.

The opportunity

Diageo is consolidating development of its consumer websites into one strategic vendor and streamlining the tech stack and content operations behind them, with one goal: efficiency. You will design how that platform is enhanced, run and kept safe.

Key Responsibilities

  • Tech solution design and estimation: Support the product road mapping journey alongside the Head of Websites Product, to prioritise business opportunities against real cost and effort. Translate product priorities into technical delivery plans and execution. Work with the Websites Tech Lead to review existing solutions and identify alternatives in the market — CMS, search, identity, commerce, hosting, AI tooling — that best fit the business needs prioritised by product. Champion the target technical design: a consolidated, headless and composable platform, shared components and streamlined content operations across complete portfolio of sites. Own build-vs-buy-vs-reuse recommendations and keep technical decisions documented.
  • Squad design and delivery of the product roadmap: Lead delivery of product roadmap, ensuring high-quality execution at the highest sustainable delivery velocity. Define the ideal squad composition with our development partner: roles, seniority, skills mix and capacity (e.g. delivery lead, tech lead, front-end, back-end, QA automation, DevOps, UX/UI), and how squads map to platform, brand builds and run/maintain. Define the agile ceremonies and ways of working — sprint planning, refinement, stand‑ups, reviews, retrospectives, quarterly planning, Definition of Ready and Done — in a multi‑vendor ecosystem and keep improving them. Own release management, testing, deployment and operational readiness frameworks.
  • Platform maintenance and tech health: Own, monitor and improve the maintenance and technical health of the platform: uptime, performance (Core Web Vitals), dependency and version currency, technical debt and cost. Manage platform operations, performance and incident resolution across platforms, and own the incident management process end to end — severity model, on‑call, escalation, communication and post‑incident reviews. Run a planned maintenance and tech‑debt programme alongside new feature delivery.
  • Compliance, security and vulnerability management: Ensure security, privacy and compliance requirements are embedded into delivery and operations. Support the technical solutions and internal processes that keep every site compliant with the rules for marketing alcohol online: age verification, responsible‑drinking messaging, market‑specific advertising codes, cookie consent, GDPR and local privacy laws, and accessibility. Own the vulnerability review and resolution process with the vendor and Diageo Technology — scanning, pen testing, patching SLAs and secure release. Design the cybersecurity and monitoring strategy that gets ahead of threats such as PHP vulnerabilities: a full dependency inventory, automated updates, security scanning before every release, AI‑assisted threat detection and alerting, and a regular patch cycle, so fixes are planned work rather than last‑minute fire drills.
  • Business translation through KPIs and targets: Define, track and hit KPIs and targets for delivery velocity, tech health, compliance and the maintenance process. Own communication to the business on delivery, platform health, incidents and risk using KPIs set. Work with Head of Product & to define cost, time, consumer experience and risk — for brand, market and senior leadership audiences. Hold the development partner to agreed SLAs and KPIs and use the data to drive continuous improvement.

Qualifications and experience

  • Agency‑led delivery: a track record of leading digital delivery through an external agency or outsourced partner — setting requirements, squad set‑up and SLAs, and holding the partner to account.
  • Agile delivery and release management: solid experience running agile delivery, releases and platform operations at scale.
  • AI Enhanced delivery proven with Data: Experience applying AI‑driven automation (e.g. AI coding assistants, automated testing and code review, AI‑powered monitoring) alongside relevant platform metrics to raise delivery velocity & improve platform performance.
  • Proactive security and maintenance: experience designing security and monitoring strategies that get ahead of vulnerabilities (e.g. PHP), patches and third‑party changes — dependency management, automated scanning, threat detection, API version tracking — without slowing delivery.
  • Compliance in delivery: experience building security, privacy and regulatory requirements into delivery.
  • Modern web architecture: strong knowledge of headless platforms, e.g. Contentful or Umbraco, Next.js, React, Vercel, Algolia, Auth0 and Shopify.
  • Platform consolidation: experience moving legacy websites to a modern stack and bringing many sites onto one platform.
  • Global collaboration: a clear communicator who works well across global, multi‑functional teams.
