This Institutional Physician position operates a Doctor's Office Practice within the correctional center. The practice is supported by a Nurse Manager who operates the health services system at the site.

Primary duties involve providing professional medical care and medication management to offenders with assistance from nursing staff. Responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing and interpreting patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
  • Diagnosing or treating acute health care problems, such as illnesses, infections, or injuries.
  • Recommending diagnostic or therapeutic interventions with attention to safety, cost, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, adherence, and efficacy.
  • Prescribing medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized.
  • Prescribing appropriate chemical or mechanical measures to assist offenders in improving behaviours.
  • Assisting with preparation and modification of treatment plans and recommending appropriate programs.
  • Educating patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances.
  • Providing evidence-based health education to the offender population.
  • Being one of the primary members of the institution's internal health services multidisciplinary team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited medical college.
  • Completion of an approved residency in a primary care specialty, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or similar specialty.
  • Active license to practice medicine in Virginia, and board eligible or certified.
  • Extensive knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mental illness and current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) diagnostic criteria.
  • Knowledge of professional and ethical standards of practice and interventions appropriate for the assigned population.
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Strong communication skills – orally and in writing/email.

  • Experience working in a Correctional Environment.
  • Experience treating in a public health care setting.
