The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. Three Rivers Health District serves the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula region which includes the counties of: Richmond, Westmoreland, Northumberland, Lancaster, Essex, Middlesex, Mathews, Gloucester, King & Queen and King William.
The position of Health Educator Senior provides or supervises all health education services in a district for a segment of a statewide program by planning, implementing, and evaluating health education activities. May include the supervision of staff.
Characteristic activities:
- Establish goals and objectives for assigned programs.
- Prepare and submit grant applications.
- Deliver educational programs to clients.
- Conduct health education training.
- Revise and develop educational materials.
- Collect program-specific data and write reports.
- Conduct needs assessments.
- Provide technical assistance to local and community agencies/organizations regarding program planning.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge of public health issues; public and private health care practices; program evaluation; planning and policy development; community organizing; survey methods and use of data and health education principles.
- Skills in program planning; implementations and evaluation; community assessment and organization; writing reports and program plans; grant writing; public speaking; group dynamics and consultation with other professionals and the general public.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, problem solve, make appropriate decisions and develop program goals and objectives, evaluate program outcomes, impacts and processes.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; utilise excellent interpersonal skills and foster good working relationships with professionals and community groups to achieve desired outcomes.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with information and security policies.
Additional Considerations:
- Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) for Health Educators.
- Experience working in public health, social work, human services or health-related field preferred.
