To provide effective Career and Technical instruction in the assigned trade area; to assist assigned students to complete the required competencies for that trade area; demonstrate effective classroom or lab management; ensure that the lab is operated in compliance with all aspects of safety management; and to maintain accurate and current student records for the assigned student.
Minimum Qualifications
- The ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching and work with students and inmate aides in a classroom/lab environment.
- The ability to maintain accurate records.
- Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education.
- Must possess working knowledge of basic adult education field, adult literacy, and computer software appropriate for program needs.
- Experience in maintaining classroom, equipment, and inventories.
- Demonstrate competency in the related field of current trade licensure.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Must have at least two years' full time or 2000 hours of verifiable experience in the last 5 years in the relevant field/trade area for a teaching certificate.
License: Must be eligible for a “Certified Custodial Technician License” or an Industrial/Technical Professional License/Certification in the relevant trade area/field. Must be eligible for a teaching certificate by the Department of Education.
If you do not currently hold a teachers/trade license from the Department of Education (DOE):
- You must submit all documentation for your provisional license to the licensure designee for Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) during the first 90 days of employment.
- Obtaining a provisional license within the 1-year probationary period is the employee’s responsibility and is required to continue employment at the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC).

- Experience in correctional education classroom management.
- Five years of experience in the related trade/field.
- Must have a “Certified Custodial Technician License” or an Industrial/Technical Professional License/Certification in the relevant trade area/field.
- Must have a teaching certificate by the Department of Education.
- Knowledge of all phases of the trade area; ability to supervise adults in a classroom/lab environment.
- Knowledge of correctional education classroom management.
- The ability to facilitate other instructors; knowledge of the Department of Corrections (DOC) institutional policies and procedures and policies governing correctional education.
