The Automation Technical Manager plays a critical role in ensuring automated warehouse systems deliver maximum operational value, performance, and reliability. Acting as the site's technical authority for warehouse automation, the role bridges advanced system capability with day-to-day operational execution. Working closely with Operations, Engineering, the Flow Room, IT, and automation technology partners, the role focuses on optimising Goods-to-Person systems, WMS-WCS integration, robotics, and end-to-end system behaviour. The role is accountable for translating complex automation data and system logic into practical actions that improve throughput, availability, accuracy, and service performance. Through strong technical leadership, continuous improvement, and stakeholder collaboration, the Automation Technical Manager ensures the site fully leverages its automation investment while building automation understanding and confidence across operational teams.
A TYPICAL DAY MAY INVOLVE:
- Monitoring automation performance using WCS/WMS dashboards and exception reporting to identify risks, opportunities, and improvement actions.
- Working closely with the Flow Room to optimise real-time decision-making, volume balancing, slotting logic, and system priorities.
- Leading technical root cause analysis (RCA) for automation incidents or performance degradation and coordinating corrective actions.
- Collaborating with Operations and Engineering Managers to align system capability with operational demand and KPI targets.
- Managing system changes, software updates, and new automation features, including testing, validation, go-live support, and post-implementation review.
- Engaging with automation vendors and technology partners through technical review meetings, escalation management, and validation of fixes and upgrades.
