We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated GIS and Carbon Calculation Specialist to join our team. This role involves performing comprehensive geographic information system (GIS) analysis and carbon calculations for potential projects, including Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) initiatives. The successful candidate will play a critical role in supporting our environmental sustainability goals and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our carbon offset projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct GIS analysis to identify suitable sites for ARR and REDD+ projects
- Perform carbon stock assessments and calculate potential carbon sequestration for various tree species and planting densities
- Develop and maintain spatial databases for project sites, including data on land use, vegetation cover, soil types, and other relevant factors
- Analyse satellite imagery and aerial photographs to monitor land use changes and forest cover dynamics
- Prepare detailed reports and presentations on GIS analysis and carbon calculation results
- Collaborate with project managers, forestry experts, and other stakeholders to develop and implement project plans
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards and methodologies for ARR and REDD+ projects
- Stay up-to-date with advancements in GIS technology, carbon calculation methodologies, and environmental regulations
Requirements
What we\’re looking for
- Education: Bachelor\’s degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Forestry, or a related field. A Master\’s degree is preferred
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in GIS analysis and carbon calculations, preferably in the context of forestry or environmental sustainability projects
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS)
- Experience with remote sensing tools and techniques
- Strong skills in carbon modelling and sequestration calculations
- Familiarity with carbon accounting standards and methodologies (e.g., VCS, CDM, Gold Standard)
- Competence in statistical analysis and data visualisation tools
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in ARR and REDD+ project development and implementation
- Certification in GIS or a related field
- Familiarity with geographic data collection methods (e.g., GPS)
- Knowledge of biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services
