About DFT Operator
Join Our Team at DFTO
DFTO is the government’s public sector rail owning group. Its purpose is to bring all currently privately-owned train operators into public ownership in advance of the creation of Great British Railways in 2027 - and deliver improvements in the here and now by unifying and integrating train operations under common public ownership.
DFTO has over 30,000 employees, runs over 11,000 services a day and delivers over 930 million customer journeys across its networks every year. 7,000 people joined the railway family in the last year
Major improvements are being delivered by DFTO train operators (TOCs) that are already under public ownership - these are LNER, Northern, TransPennine Express (TPE), Southeast, South Western Railway (SWR), c2c, Greater Anglia, WM Trains, GTR, and Chiltern.
We work closely with the DfT but operate independently with our own governance and leadership teams. Our priority is ensuring efficient, dependable rail services for everyone.
Primary Purpose of Job:
This is a chance to sit at the centre of how DfTO understands, explains and acts on revenue performance at a defining moment for the railway. As operators move into public ownership and the industry prepares for Great British Railways, the need for clear, trusted and consistent revenue insight has never been more important.
This role will help turn complex data into practical evidence that supports commercial decisions, strengthens business cases, and helps the organisation focus on the opportunities that will grow revenue and reduce subsidy.
The role:
The Revenue Reporting Specialist will help build the reporting discipline that sits behind DfTO’s commercial agenda. Working as part of the Customer & Revenue Growth team, you will develop and maintain high quality reporting, analyse complex revenue data, and make sure senior stakeholders have the insight they need to understand performance, spot trends and make better decisions.
You will be expected to bring rigour and curiosity to the numbers: testing assumptions, benchmarking performance, identifying what is changing, and translating detailed analysis into clear messages that can be used by commercial leads, finance colleagues and senior industry forums.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain accurate, consistent and well-assured revenue reporting that supports commercial decision-making across DfTO and the wider industry.
- Analyse complex revenue datasets, identify trends and explain what they mean for performance, risk, opportunity and future growth.
- Build reporting frameworks, models and cross-tabulations that support business cases, investment decisions and senior-level performance conversations.
- Benchmark performance against internal and external indicators, helping teams understand where revenue is improving, where it is under pressure, and what action may be needed.
- Translate detailed analysis into clear, practical insight for senior stakeholders, including concise narratives, dashboards and briefing material.
- Represent the team at relevant industry forums, including PDFC, bringing a clear view of reporting issues, emerging trends and areas where greater consistency is needed.
- Work with colleagues across commercial, finance and analytical teams to improve data quality, reporting processes and the way insight is used.
Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Technical Qualifications:
- A detail-oriented analyst who enjoys working with large, complex datasets and turning them into insight people can use.
- Strong technically, with experience using tools such as SQL, Python or equivalent approaches to manipulate, analyse and test data.
- Expert in Excel, with the ability to design complex models that are robust, transparent and user-friendly.
- Confident using Power BI or similar tools to visualise data and communicate trends clearly.
