Personal Assistant

A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF

I am 79 years old and live in Rhiwbina, Cardiff. I have Advanced Alzheimer’s and possible onset of vascular dementia. I have very limited mobility including the need to use a stair lift and a wheelchair for anything over a few meters distance. I can walk about 30 meters but have to stop every 10 meters or so. I can walk around a supermarket if I have a trolley to lean on. I am not bladder continent at night and the occasional bladder continence accident in the day, so need to be reminded regularly to go to the toilet. I like music from the 50\\\’s, 60\\\’s and 70\\\’s, singing and going out to dementia groups for social stimulation. Colouring books and music help ease my anxiety. I love ice cream but I can only have it as an occasional treat due to health concerns. I was very independent so I do not respond well to being told what to do! I still have a good sense of humour.

Purpose of Job

My husband has been my carer for 7 years and we now need extra support to manage my needs as I deteriorate which will hopefully improve his wellbeing by having a better balance of his interests and living with me

Hours of Work

16 hours each week to be scheduled as follows, current hours are Monday to Friday only.

• Monday, Wednesday & Friday- 7-9am
• Tuesday & Thursday- 7.30-9.30am
• Monday to Friday- 8.30-9pm
• Thursday- 2.30-6pm

This is a provisional schedule and subject to change.

We would prefer to employ 2 people to share the hours as they are very likely to increase.

Rate of Pay

£14.75

Tasks Involved

• Moving and Handling – I need help to lie down and sit up in bed in the evening and morning and my wheelchair has to be lifted in and out of your car boot. I have to be pushed in the wheelchair and I am currently about a size 24.
• Social outings, community activities

Type of Person Required

• Experienced with caring for people with dementia and personal care is essential.
• Able to manual handle (training can be arranged)

• Friendly/Sociable/Sense of humour
• Confident/Proactive/Knowledgeable
• Car driver/access to a car with business insurance/Clean driving license

About the Job

Though a part-time job, this will be a proper job requiring a National Insurance number to be submitted. A probation period will be necessary in the first instance. Wages will be paid 4 weekly. You will receive 5.6 weeks paid holiday (pro rata). You will be required to apply for a DBS check at no expense to you.
