We are looking for a Senior Unix Systems Engineer to join Paragon and take technical ownership of their Unix estate across the UK and international hosting environment. As the Senior Unix Systems Engineer, you’ll act as the technical lead and senior escalation point for Unix platforms across Paragon’s hosting estate. You’ll be responsible for the stability, performance, security, and ongoing improvement of AIX and Linux environments, while supporting infrastructure strategy, automation, and mentoring within the team. This is a senior, hands-on role for someone who enjoys being close to the platform, leading by example, and shaping how Unix systems are designed, supported, and improved across on-prem and cloud environments.
Main Responsibilities:
- Act as the senior technical authority for Unix platforms across Paragon
- Design, build, support, and optimise AIX and Linux environments (Red Hat, Oracle Linux, CentOS)
- Provide 3rd line support and senior escalation for complex Unix incidents
- Lead patching, upgrades, lifecycle management, and platform improvements
- Support Unix platforms across on-prem VMware and public cloud environments (AWS, Azure, OCI)
- Drive automation, scripting, and configuration improvements to reduce manual effort
- Ensure Unix environments meet security, compliance, backup, and DR requirements
- Work closely with cloud, infrastructure, security, and application teams
- Contribute to platform strategy and mentor engineers within the team
- Participate in an on-call rota and occasional out-of-hours work
Required Skills & Experience:
- Extensive experience supporting AIX and Linux in enterprise environments
- Strong knowledge of Oracle Linux, including Ksplice
- Experience across on-prem, hybrid, and cloud infrastructure
- Solid understanding of virtualisation, storage, and Unix networking
- Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve complex, business-critical issues
- Experience working in ITIL-governed environments
- Confident communicator, comfortable working with senior technical and non-technical stakeholders
Desirable:
- Unix or Linux certifications (RHCE, RHCSA, or similar)
- Strong scripting and automation experience (Bash, Python, PowerShell)
- Experience working in AWS, Azure, or OCI
- Previous experience mentoring engineers or acting as a technical lead
This is a permanent remote role – with occasional travel to Paragon sites. Hours Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm.
