An exciting opportunity has arisen within Devon Partnership NHS Trust's nationally recognised ECT Team for a Band 6 Specialist Practitioner with a development route available for Band 5 nurses. The team is based at Franklyn House, Exeter, and delivers ECT across several locations including Exmouth, North Devon, Torbay, and the Royal Devon University Hospital sites. The ECT Clinic is at Exmouth Community Hospital on Monday and Friday from 08:00-16:00. Accredited with multiple commendations from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, we are proud to be a national leader in Nurse-led ECT delivery and innovation. This clinical role is ideal for a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with a passion for holistic, person-centred care and a drive to develop skills in both mental and physical health. Previous experience in ECT is not required as full training and national certification will be provided. The role offers a rare chance to build in-depth clinical expertise while observing meaningful patient recovery and long-term outcomes. Flexibility and mobility are essential, and while the base is Exeter, treatment is delivered across the region.

Main duties of the job:

  • The ECT Specialist Practitioner plays a key clinical role in delivering safe, effective, and compassionate electroconvulsive therapy to patients with complex needs.
  • You will gain competencies in physical health monitoring including ECGs, venepuncture, and by the end of training will be a practitioner able to administer ECT having completed these capabilities.
  • The successful applicant will learn to work collaboratively with acute hospital theatre teams to support patients undergoing treatment.
  • Training will be tailored to equip you with all necessary skills for delivering high-quality care in diverse settings.
  • Duties include preparing patients for ECT, administering treatment initially under supervision, then on qualifying independently, monitoring recovery, and conducting three-month post-treatment follow-ups.
  • As part of a small but highly influential team, you'll also contribute to national discussions on ECT practice, supported by colleagues active on national ECT committees.
  • Clinics run primarily on Mondays and Fridays, with occasional schedule variability due to acute care demands.
  • The role does not currently involve working Bank Holidays.

If you are an enthusiastic and compassionate clinician seeking to specialise in a highly respected area of mental health care, and continually looking to develop both professionally and personally we would love to hear from you.
