Are you a motivated and customer-focused individual with a positive, can-do attitude? Would you like to join a friendly, supportive team that helps people access vital healthcare services across Devon and beyond? We are looking for a Transport Coordination Officer to join the Patient Transport Advice Service (PTAS) at Devon County Council. PTAS works in partnership with NHS Devon and Devon Partnership NHS Trust to ensure eligible patients can access appropriate and safe transport to attend healthcare appointments.
About the Role
As a Transport Coordination Officer, you will play a key role in assessing eligibility for NHS-funded non-emergency patient transport. You will speak daily with patients, carers, healthcare professionals and Devon County Council colleagues to gather information and determine the most appropriate transport arrangements. Where patients are not eligible for NHS-funded transport, you will provide advice and information on alternative travel options, helping individuals make their own travel plans. This is a varied role that extends beyond transport assessments and bookings. You will also contribute to meetings, support reporting activities, and undertake visits to healthcare sites across Devon.
Why Join PTAS?
Working within the Patient Transport Advice Service you will provide support to some of the most vulnerable members of our communities. Every day, you will help people overcome barriers to accessing healthcare, ensuring they can attend appointments safely. As part of a dedicated team, you will have the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge, and work collaboratively with colleagues across Devon County Council, NHS Devon and healthcare providers. No two days are the same!
About You
- You will need to have experience working in a busy environment, managing competing priorities and adapting to frequently changing demands.
- You will need to be organised, resilient and able to work accurately under pressure, supporting colleagues to achieve the needs of the service.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- A professional and confident telephone manner.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workloads effectively.
- Excellent IT skills, including experience of Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Excel and SharePoint.
- The ability to assess information, solve problems and make informed decisions.
- Experience of working collaboratively as part of a team to achieve results.
- The ability to adapt and learn to new processes quickly.
You will use a variety of systems, including call management software and specialist transport systems, so being adaptable and able to learn multiple systems is essential. Duties will also include tendering and issuing contracts, processing invoices, resolving queries from patients, providers and healthcare organisations, and supporting wider service development activities.
Working Arrangements
PTAS supports agile working, combining home working with attendance at our office based at County Hall, Exeter, in line with service needs. During your initial training period, you will be required to attend the office daily. Once training is complete, there is an expectation you will attend the office weekly, together with attendance for meetings, training and any other service requirements. Occasional travel to hospital sites across the county will also be required.
In Return, We Offer
- A supportive, friendly and inclusive team environment.
- Agile working arrangements, combining home and office-based working.
- Generous annual leave entitlement, increasing with service.
- Membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme.
- Access to learning opportunities.
- Employee wellbeing support and access to occupational health services.
- A range of staff discounts and employee benefits through Devon County Council.
