Temporary Part Time - 32 hours per week. We're looking for an enthusiastic and customer-focused Safer Recruitment Coordinator to join our dedicated Safer Recruitment Team. In this role, you’ll provide high-quality advice and support to Devon County Council and a range of customer organisations, helping to ensure the effective and compliant processing of Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. Based at County Hall in Exeter, the team offers flexible working arrangements, with both hybrid and fully office-based options available.

Safer Recruitment Service is part of Devon County Council’s Recruitment Hub within People and Culture. Since its conception over 20 years ago, Safer Recruitment Service has established itself as a reputable and trusted advisory and DBS processing service. It is a critical service in preventing the risk of harm to vulnerable children and adults accessing our public services by supporting safe recruitment practice.
What we do
Safer Recruitment is responsible for delivering timely and accurate advice on all aspects of safer recruitment in line with current legislation and guidance. We receive a high volume of queries by email and by phone from internal and external customers. Devon County Council is a registered umbrella body and responsible organisation with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), offering an online DBS application service for basic, standard, and enhanced level checks via the Safer Recruitment Service. It provides this service to local authorities, schools, academies, emergency services, a variety of businesses, organisations, and charities across the UK. Our colleagues are authorised to act as a DBS Countersignatory; meeting our obligations outlined in the DBS Code of Practice, assessing DBS eligibility, and ensuring DBS applications are submitted in accordance with legislative provisions.
The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of a comprehensive Safer Recruitment service, supporting Devon County Council, partner organisations and external customers to complete pre-employment checks efficiently and effectively. By ensuring these checks are carried out accurately and in a timely manner, you will help minimise risk and promote safe recruitment practices across all organisations we support. The role plays an important part in Devon County Council’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk. You will help ensure that robust employment screening processes are in place to protect customers, service users and the wider community.
About You
We’re looking for a highly organised and customer-focused individual who thrives in a busy environment and takes pride in delivering a high-quality service. You’ll have experience in administration, recruitment, or customer service roles, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines while maintaining excellent attention to detail. You will be a confident communicator, able to build positive relationships with colleagues, managers and customers, and provide clear advice and guidance both verbally and in writing. You’ll be comfortable making decisions using sound judgement and available information, and will approach your work with accuracy, professionalism and discretion. As a collaborative team player, you’ll be willing to support colleagues, contribute to a positive team culture. You’ll also be committed to delivering excellent customer service and handling sensitive information in accordance with data protection requirements. You will have good working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications and be confident using computer systems to maintain accurate records and manage information effectively. Most importantly, you’ll share our commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk, helping to ensure safer recruitment practices across the organisations we support. Experience of working in a HR, recruitment or safer recruitment environment, together with an awareness of safer recruitment legislation and pre-employment checking processes, would be advantageous.
