DB Cargo UK is on an ambitious journey to become Europe's leading rail logistics provider with a long-term plan to shift traffic from roads, protect our climate and grow the economy. To achieve this, we are looking for Mobile Operatives to join us as part of our ground staff team. As a Mobile Operative, you'll be on the go each day by preparing our trains so they're safe to go on their journey for our customers.
Rail is one of the safest and most eco-friendly means of transport with one single freight train able to carry enough materials to build 30 houses. Our services replace the equivalent of over 22 million truck movements every year, saving 7 million tonnes of carbon emissions. As a Mobile Operative, you'll be directly contributing to reducing carbon emissions and shifting traffic from roads to the rail.
The role of Mobile Operative is hands-on and you’ll be involved in the following:
- Train preparation; shunting, marshalling
- Train dispatch
- Problem solving
- Ensuring the safe operations of trains
You will directly contribute to our service delivery and have the opportunity to influence the service we offer to our customers. The role will cover a varied number of customer sites, DB Cargo UK sites and infrastructure worksites as required. You will be required to work outside in all weather conditions come rain or shine. Your standard hours of work will be 35 hours per week. Flexibility is a must as Freight never stops, so naturally this role will involve working shift patterns which includes unsociable hours.
To be successful in the Mobile Operative role you’ll need:
- To be highly motivated and committed to your work
- Have a flexible approach to shift working
- Experience of teamwork and lone working
- Work to the instruction of the person in charge
- Attention to detail
- Be extremely safety focused
In return, we offer the following benefits package:
- Full training into the role - 5 week residential training (subject to location)
- Starting salary: £30,412 per annum plus shift allowance of £3,936 per annum
- Following probationary period: £31,825 per annum + shift allowance
- Company pension scheme
- 31 days paid holiday each year in addition to 2 public holidays
- Family Reward Benefit Scheme
If you’re looking for a career change or a new challenge this role could be the perfect fit for you.
Entry Level Requirements:
- Full clean, manual driving license
- Located within a 1-hour commutable drive to the central hub point location - Culham Station
- Maths & English GCSE Grade C/4 and above
- Previous rail experience would be a bonus; however, this is not essential as we offer a 5-week residential (subject to location) training course into the role.
The Recruitment Process:
- Sifting of applications and location check
- Candidate Pre-Assessment Survey
- Phone Screening
- Assessment Based Interview
If you are successful at interview and an immediate position is available, the Recruitment Team will look to send out an offer of employment to you outlining the key information of the role, pre-employment checks and new starter forms for you to complete. If you are successful at interview and there is not a vacancy, we will place you in the talent pool for your chosen area and keep you updated when a vacancy arises. We are unable to give a timescale on how long you may be in the talent pool, however, the Recruitment Team will keep you updated throughout.
Please contact the Recruitment Team via email if you would like more information about the job role and the recruitment process and they will be able to send out our Groundstaff Candidate Pack.
