We are seeking an experienced and motivated Project Engineer to join our Structures Team. The successful candidate will take responsibility for the technical delivery and day-to-day coordination of structural engineering projects, working from feasibility and concept design through detailed design and construction support.
This role is suited to an engineer with a strong grounding in UK structural design practice who can manage their own workload, coordinate project inputs and communicate confidently with clients, architects, contractors and other members of the design team. Experience in modular construction or modern methods of construction is desirable
What You'll Do
- Manage and deliver structural engineering projects or defined work packages to agreed quality, programme and budget requirements.
- Prepare structural calculations, engineering reports, technical specifications, design notes, and feasibility studies.
- Develop practical and efficient structural solutions in steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber, including foundation and connection design as appropriate.
- Coordinate structural designs with architectural, civil, building services and specialist subcontractor information.
- Produce and review design information from concept and scheme stages through detailed design and construction support.
- Apply relevant UK legislation, Building Regulations, British Standards, Eurocodes and recognised industry guidance.
- Attend and contribute to client, design team, contractor and site meetings, communicating technical matters clearly and professionally.
- Review drawings, models and technical submissions, identifying design risks, interfaces, and buildability considerations.
- Undertake site inspections and respond to technical queries during construction, escalating significant risks where appropriate.
- Monitor project actions, deadlines, and deliverables, providing clear progress updates to the Project Director or senior project lead.
- Support the preparation of fee proposals, scopes of service, and project programmes when required.
- Provide guidance and technical support to graduate engineers and technicians, including checking work within agreed competence and review arrangements.
- Contribute to quality, health and safety, sustainability and continuous improvement objectives across the organisation.
- Undertake other duties that reasonably fall within the scope and level of the role.
What You'll Bring
- A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, or equivalent relevant qualification.
- A minimum of 4 years’ relevant structural engineering experience gained in the UK.
- Sound knowledge of UK structural design practice, Building Regulations, British Standards and Eurocodes.
- Demonstrable experience of steel and concrete frame design, foundation design and the preparation of structural calculations.
- Experience delivering projects from scheme or concept design through detailed design and construction support.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and appropriate structural analysis and design software.
- Ability to plan and manage personal project workloads, meet deadlines, and maintain accurate, high-quality technical outputs.
- Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary design information and identify technical interfaces and risks.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including client-facing communication and technical report writing.
- A collaborative and proactive approach, with sound judgement and commitment to professional standards.
- Experience in modular construction and/or modern methods of construction, including design for manufacture and assembly, off-site fabrication or modular interfaces.
- Understanding the coordination, tolerances, connections, lifting, transportation, and temporary conditions associated with modular or off-site construction.
- Experience working across sectors such as education, healthcare, commercial, or residential development.
- Experience using Revit, BIM workflows or other digital design and coordination tools.
- Working towards Chartered Engineer status with a recognised professional institution, or already professionally qualified.
- Experience supporting fee proposals, project planning, mentoring, or technical checking.
- An interest in sustainable design, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Experience in modular construction and/or modern methods of construction, including design for manufacture and assembly, off-site fabrication or modular interfaces.
- Understanding the coordination, tolerances, connections, lifting, transportation, and temporary conditions associated with modular or off-site construction.
- Experience working across sectors such as education, healthcare, commercial, or residential development.
