Designer Group is expanding our UK project footprint—and we’re seeking an experienced Mechanical Project Manager to lead the delivery of large-scale mechanical engineering packages across our mission-critical, industrial, and commercial projects. This is a leadership role requiring deep mechanical expertise, practical construction knowledge, and proven project management ability. You’ll have full control over budgets, schedules, and client expectations. You will be responsible for the commercial delivery of the project, commercial reporting, and demonstrating financial control at the monthly CVR (Cost Value Reconciliation) meetings.
Key Responsibilities- Mechanical Systems Focus
- Oversee the design coordination, installation, commissioning, and handover of complex mechanical systems (HVAC, chilled water, heating, plumbing, fire protection, etc.)
- Ensure all mechanical systems meet performance requirements, specifications, and industry regulations (e.g. CIBSE, SFG20, British Standards)
- Lead value engineering, prefabrication strategies, and technical reviews to optimise solutions
- Review and approve technical submittals, method statements, RAMS, and commissioning plans
- Coordinate with BIM and engineering teams to resolve technical queries and design clashes
- Project Management & Leadership
- Plan and execute mechanical works in line with the overall construction programme
- Lead daily, weekly, and monthly project meetings with site teams, subcontractors, and clients
- Take full ownership of commercial delivery across the project, managing budget performance, cost tracking, and procurement in conjunction with the Quantity Surveyor
- Prepare and lead financial reporting, including monthly CVR meetings to ensure accountability, accuracy, and profitability
- Manage procurement of materials, subcontractors, and plant/equipment in collaboration with Commercial & Procurement teams
- Monitor progress, productivity, and resource allocation across multiple trades
- Track project performance against KPIs, identify risks, and implement corrective actions
- Ensure full compliance with H&S procedures, reporting to the Health & Safety Manager as required
- Produce detailed project reports including RFIs, procurement schedules, and progress trackers
- Team & Stakeholder Management
- Lead multidisciplinary project teams including engineers, foremen, supervisors, QSs, and external consultants
- Maintain a positive and solutions-focused relationship with clients, design teams, and key supply chain partners
- Represent Designer Group as the senior point of contact for your project(s)
- 5–10 years’ experience managing mechanical installations in large-scale construction projects
- Proven track record as a Project Manager or Senior Mechanical Engineer in M&E contracting
- In-depth knowledge of mechanical building services, commissioning processes, and technical regulations
- Demonstrated commercial awareness with experience in cost control, reporting, and CVR processes
- Excellent project planning, leadership, and communication skills
- Strong IT skills: MS Project, Excel, AutoCAD/Navisworks/BIM coordination platforms preferred
- Qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services, or Construction Management (Level 7 or equivalent)
