Swindon Full-Time No home office possible
Description This
Description

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the delivery and ongoing evolution of Nationwide’s SAS Viya platform. As a SAS Viya Platform Engineer, you will help deliver against a roadmap of change, working hands-on to build, enhance, and support the SAS Viya platform used by a large and growing user community. You will balance the demands of maintaining platform stability, security, and compliance with the delivery of new capabilities that improve the experience and productivity of your users.

Working as part of a high-performing engineering team, you will contribute to the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the platform running in Microsoft Azure. You will use modern engineering practices such as Infrastructure as Code, Kubernetes-based deployments, and automated pipelines to deliver reliable and repeatable solutions. Your role will also involve diagnosing and resolving platform issues, carrying out root cause analysis, and implementing improvements that enhance resilience, performance, and operational efficiency.

You will collaborate closely with a wide range of stakeholders, including security, networking, and control functions, to ensure the platform meets organisational standards and remains fit for purpose. Alongside technical delivery, you will actively engage with the user community, supporting adoption of the platform, sharing updates, and helping users make effective use of its capabilities.

We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best.

At Nationwide, we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK-wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job, you’ll be located at our nearest regional hub. There will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events in one of our office sites. This is anticipated to be monthly in Swindon or London. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works.

Nationwide is committed to the redeployment of our employees impacted by change, as such applications for redeployment candidates will be prioritised in this recruitment process.

If you’re a colleague on long-term absence (for example, on parental leave) or a temporary worker, please use your personal email address to submit an application.

What you’ll be doing

As a Data Platform Engineer, you help to deliver against a roadmap of change for our SAS Viya platform, ensuring that the platform remains in compliance with Nationwide standards and continually improving the service for your user base. About you

As a minimum, you will have/be:

  • Experience maintaining an application within Azure, using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform, Ansible to deploy infrastructure, automated through deployment automation tools such as Azure DevOps or Github Actions
  • Experience using Kubernetes – especially through a Cloud Platform like Azure Kubernetes Service
  • Experience maintaining a software product with a large user base and be able to demonstrate how you engage with and support colleagues in your user community
  • Comfortable working with Unix-style operating systems (such as Linux/Ubuntu), including command-line usage, scripting, filesystem management, and troubleshooting platform-level issues
  • Driven to improve the service you offer and will be able to demonstrate a track record in researching solutions, developing designs, and implementing changes to a cloud platform or software product, based on requirements

Our customer first behaviours put customers and members at the heart of how we work together. They are the set of behaviours that every colleague needs to display, in every role:

  • Feel what customers feel – We step into our customers’ shoes, using their feedback and insights to empathise with them and to understand their needs, so that every decision we make starts and finishes with our customers in mind

  • Say it straight – We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think – we’re honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand

  • Push for better – We don’t settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development

  • Get it done – We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes

You can strengthen your application by showing how our customer first behaviours resonate with you, and where you may have already demonstrated these.
