We have an exciting opportunity for an Accountant to join our Accounting and Reconciliations Transformation team. The team provides subject‑matter expertise in accounting and reconciliations to programmes and projects across the Society, playing a critical role in major systems transformations and the integration of Virgin Money systems. This is a period of significant change and growth, and we are seeking to strengthen the team with high‑calibre individuals.

As an Accountant within the team, you will support the analysis of changes to our reconciliation and accounting processes created by changes to systems and payments journeys as a result of business‑wide projects. You will then help design and implement solutions for new or amended reconciliations and accounting processes, following established templates and working practices to ensure that change does not introduce control issues. This will also include supporting changes arising from the integration of the Nationwide and Virgin Money businesses.

The role is expected to support the team’s vision and strategic direction, provide robust accounting and controls expertise, and build enduring relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best. The working hours (per week) for this role can be between 28 and 35 hours. At Nationwide, we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK‑wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working.

For this job you’ll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you’ll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon or London office. If you are aligned to our Glasgow hub (as this is your nearest location), there will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events. This is anticipated to be once a quarter in Glasgow.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Partner closely with project teams to understand and assess the impact of change on accounting entries, reconciliations, and end‑to‑end process flows.
  • Document and maintain reconciliations and key financial controls, ensuring they remain robust, well‑evidenced and audit‑ready at all times.
  • Produce clear, accurate process documentation to support systems specialists and developers in delivering change effectively.
  • Support the investigation, analysis and resolution of reconciling items or control issues arising from change implementations, with responsibility for identifying themes, escalating risks, and contributing to effective remediation.
  • Design pragmatic and sustainable solutions for new or amended reconciliations and accounting processes, ensuring alignment with the Financial Controls Policy and agreed team standards.

About you:

  • A relevant accountancy qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) - fully qualified.
  • Experience in operating or managing financial processes, for example accounting close and control activities, including month‑end close and reconciliations processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of organisation and attention to detail.
  • A well‑rounded stakeholder manager and relationship‑builder.
  • The ability to work independently, proactively keeping relevant stakeholders informed.
  • Experience of working on projects and/or delivering change.
  • Experience of working within formal change governance frameworks (e.g. RAID management, control sign off, change approvals).
  • Experience of working within a large, regulated organisation.

Employee benefits:

  • Access to private medical insurance.
  • A highly competitive pension to help you build a strong foundation for retirement.
  • Access to an annual performance‑related bonus.
  • Training and development to help you progress your career.
  • A great selection of additional benefits through our salary sacrifice scheme.
  • Life assurance to provide peace of mind for you and your loved ones in the event of your death.
  • Wellhub – access to a range of free and paid options for health and wellness.
  • Up to 2 days of paid volunteering a year.
