As a Business Development Director you will generate new opportunities focused on large commercial and mid‑size corporate businesses within the Midlands, acting in line with the strategic growth plan to optimise income and build a targeted lending portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, originate and execute high‑quality lending opportunities on a bilateral or club basis.
  • Establish and manage external professional relationships that generate quality referrals.
  • Analyse and interpret financial accounts, calculate key ratios, assess cash‑flow forecasts and apply credit modelling to inform lending decisions.
  • Prepare and structure detailed lending proposals for credit decisioning.
  • Lead negotiations with management teams, advisors and funding partners and supervise the due‑diligence and legal processes to completion.
  • Take responsibility for risk and compliance, identifying signs of stress and risk to minimise exposure to bad and doubtful debt.
  • Collaborate with Relationship Directors to maximise additional income and deliver a brilliant customer experience.

Qualifications

  • Experience working within a Business Banking team.
  • Proven track record in originating and securing commercial lending opportunities.
  • Experience managing all aspects of a deal process from inception to completion, including preparation of detailed credit papers, negotiation, due‑diligence review and legal completion.
  • Experience in maximising media relations and opportunities, including writing for journals and publications.
  • Business degree or financial services experience within a Business Lending environment.
  • Detailed and up‑to‑date knowledge of UK financial markets with a focus on the Commercial Banking segment.
  • Expert knowledge of banking products and services.
  • Strong commercial acumen, presentation and negotiation skills.

Working Conditions

The role requires the successful candidate to be based locally in the Midlands (Birmingham, Leicester or Nottingham) and to travel regularly to meet customers across the region. Regular collaboration events will be held at one of the Nationwide office sites, typically monthly.
