Ensure effective security of the church and associated maintenance and cleaning whilst organising all associated liturgical requirements in line with diocesan guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Punctual opening and closing of the Church and maintenance of adequate security. This will entail ensuring that all candles are extinguished, all windows and doors are closed and locked and that the Church alarm is set correctly.
  • Responsibility for the organisation of regular cleaning of all areas of the Church and the outside perimeter and provision of a high standard of cleanliness and tidiness in the sanctuary area.
  • Preparation of requirements for all Liturgical functions in the Church.
  • Co-ordinate with others, such as flower arrangers and funeral directors and photographers so that proper decorum is maintained at all times.
  • Care of all vestments and sacred cloths including arranging for laundering when necessary. The sacristan also makes sure that the vestments, church furnishings, liturgical vessels and decorative objects are kept in good condition.
  • Maintaining adequate supply of altar breads, altar wine, candles for altar and for shrines. There should be sufficient clean purificators, corporals, hand towels, incense and coals.

  • An ability to work on your own initiative
  • The ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Relevant experience including knowledge of liturgical celebrations, stock management, rota management, health and safety procedures and safe-guarding guidelines.
