As we continue to expand our digital capabilities, we are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Digital Developer with at least 2 years working experience in web development to join our Digital Development team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering accessible, responsive, and user-centred websites and applications for the council.
Working with our Senior Digital Developers, you will work closely with external designers, backend developers, and project managers to build and maintain digital platforms that meet the needs of our diverse users and support our commitment to delivering excellent public services online.
Key responsibilities:- Develop, and maintain high-quality, standards-compliant websites and web applications within our enterprise Web Content Management Solution (WCMS) and WordPress portfolio.
- Convert design prototypes into responsive, accessible, and performant front-end code in collaboration with Senior Developers.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including technical and non-technical colleagues, project stakeholders, and external design partners, to deliver solutions.
- Participate in design discussions and contribute to project, offering technical insight and creative solutions.
- Maintain and enhance existing codebases, ensuring scalability and reliability while supporting new development initiatives.
- Diagnose and resolve front-end issues across multiple browsers and devices to guarantee a consistent user experience.
- Champion accessibility standards and best practices, embedding inclusivity into all digital products.
We are looking for someone with a strong interest in public sector digital services and the following skills and experience.
Essential:- Minimum 2 years' experience working in web development (professional or substantial hobbyist work).
- Proficiency in HTML and CSS, with an understanding of responsive design principles.
- Practical experience of applying WCAG guidelines and commitment to inclusive design.
- Understanding of web design, responsive design.
- Ability to work from design specifications to develop functional web interfaces.
- Experience working with open-source WCMS platforms (e.g. WordPress).
- Understanding of version control systems, particularly Git.
- Knowledge of cloud hosting environments, such as AWS or Microsoft Azure.
- Experience of using AI to assist in web development.
- Understanding of Agile delivery practices and collaborative development environments.
- Familiarity with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g. React, Vue.js).
- Familiarity with modern server-side scripting languages such as .Net, PHP.
- Experience of using APIs.
- Technical Assessment: You'll be asked to share examples of your work, whether a single project or a portfolio, and explain your approach to web development fundamentals.
