About The Role
Are you ready to work side by side with one of policing’s most loyal and effective partners? As a Police Dog Handler, you’ll provide both proactive and reactive support to operational officers and specialist departments, using highly trained dogs to locate evidence, track offenders, manage disturbances and enhance safety for both officers and the public.
All handlers begin with a General Purpose Dog (GPD) and, once established, may be assigned a specialist search dog based on operational need and force capability. You’ll play a vital role in high-pressure situations where precision, control, and teamwork are essential.
What You’ll Be Doing
- You will respond promptly to requests for a police dog, supplying professional expertise and tactical advice and operational support to front line officers.
- You will conduct searches using general purpose or specialist dogs in support of local officers; to expedite the location of missing persons and the arrest of offenders; and to support local officers in their investigations and responses to incidents.
- You will support the containment of dangerous dogs out of control including inter-familial dog attacks and cases on private property, to protect public safety.
- You must be willing to have a liveried police vehicle at your home address while off duty or use personal vehicle to transport the police dog to and from duty.
- Acceptance of responsibility for the care of the police dog, including walking, feeding, and general care, even while off duty.
- You must be able to qualify as a public order dog handler and as a police advanced driver (if not currently trained).
