Are you a confident person with good communication skills and a keen interest in books, reading and literacy, who thrives in a busy, customer‑focused environment and is ready to join our team? We are looking for two part‑time staff to join us as Library Assistants within our network of libraries across the city. Both posts will be mainly based at Riverside Library, which is located within the Council House in Derby city centre, with one post working Saturday mornings at Chellaston Library. In all Derby’s libraries, the focus is on enthusing people about the library offer, promoting reading, providing internet access, improving literacy and wellbeing.
Responsibilities
- Work as part of a team of staff and volunteers to provide a high‑quality professional service to customers and colleagues.
- Support and deliver initiatives on a range of key areas including literacy, well‑being, and IT learning sessions.
- Assist the delivery of campaigns, activities and events to increase library use, book borrowing and return visits.
- Promote the library confidently and effectively to raise awareness of its benefits and positive impacts.
- Help ensure the building is a safe, accessible and welcoming environment.
Qualifications
- Minimum Grade C GCSE English or equivalent.
- An understanding of how libraries can contribute to improving people’s physical and mental wellbeing.
- Skills to work in a busy environment and handle difficult and confrontational situations effectively.
- Ability to be a positive, enthusiastic and flexible team player.
- Enthusiasm for reading and ability to discuss its benefits.
