Deputy is a global SaaS workforce management company with hubs in Sydney, Melbourne, San Francisco and London, plus team members working remotely across the United States. Our platform serves over 1.5 million workers and 375,000 workplaces across 100+ countries. We are backed by top global investors and achieved Unicorn status in 2024. At Deputy, we’re improving the world of work, one shift at a time, for 80% of the world’s workforce: hourly workers. These are the dedicated employees who keep our world running – from baristas to nurses, cleaners to delivery drivers, florists to factory workers. Despite their vital role in society, most workplace technology has focused on those workers who sit behind a desk, but at Deputy, we transform the frontline.

When businesses use Deputy, their workplaces thrive – the business is more profitable, compliant, and productive, while the workers are more engaged and happier at work. We're becoming an AI-native company, a commitment that means you'll be empowered (and expected) to use AI tools and thinking in your day-to-day work. You'll have the training, support, and freedom to use AI responsibly and creatively to spark ideas, solve problems faster, and unlock new ways of working. If you’re passionate about creating solutions that put people first and helping businesses and their teams thrive, join us at Deputy and make an impact where it matters most!

The role involves leading the engineering team responsible for Scheduling, one of the most heavily used parts of Deputy. You will lead and grow engineers with a range of experience while helping the team make sound technical decisions and deliver meaningful improvements for customers. The role combines the complexity of a mature, business-critical product with the opportunity to improve its foundations and shape what comes next. The team is modernising established workflows, improving performance for larger customers and exploring where AI can make scheduling simpler and more effective.

This is a technical engineering leadership role. You will develop a strong understanding of the product and architecture so you can contribute to technical discussions, coach senior engineers and help the team make pragmatic trade-offs. During your first few months, you will spend some time in the codebase and may contribute targeted changes as part of learning the product. Over time, your greatest impact will come through the performance and growth of the team.

What you will do:

  • Lead the team: Set clear expectations, give useful feedback and coach engineers through their growth, performance and career development. Build a team culture where people can challenge ideas, learn from mistakes and hold a high bar for each other. Create clarity when priorities change, surface risks early and help the team maintain a predictable delivery cadence. Hire thoughtfully as the team grows and reduce single points of failure through cross-skilling and deliberate resourcing decisions.
  • Shape the technical direction: Develop a deep understanding of the Scheduling product and its architecture so you can contribute meaningfully to technical decisions. Work with senior engineers to set technical direction and make clear decisions about architecture, frameworks and build-versus-buy trade-offs. Guide improvements to the performance, reliability, security and maintainability of a multi-tenant product used by businesses around the world. Stay close to the engineering work through design reviews, architecture discussions, incident learning and targeted proofs of concept.
  • Deliver customer and business outcomes: Partner closely with Product, Design and Data to turn strategy and customer problems into a focused roadmap with measurable outcomes. Balance near-term customer value with the technical investment needed to keep Scheduling fast, dependable and ready for enterprise scale. Keep the team connected to Deputy's goals and explain the context behind priorities and trade-offs.
  • Help evolve how we build with AI: Use AI-assisted and agentic development tools on real work and form your own view of where they help and where they do not. Help the team develop effective working practices for machine-drafted code, including review, testing, observability and documentation. Maintain the quality bar by ensuring that what ships is correct, secure, maintainable and understood by the people who own it. When the team contributes to customer-facing AI, work with Product and Engineering on evaluation, guardrails, cost, latency and graceful failure.

What we are looking for:

  • Must haves: Experience leading engineers, whether as an Engineering Manager or a senior engineer who has taken responsibility for technical direction, delivery and the growth of others. Strong technical judgement. Experience delivering and operating customer-facing software, including making trade-offs between delivery speed, reliability and long-term maintainability. A track record of developing engineers through clear expectations, regular feedback and thoughtful coaching. Experience partnering with Product and Design to shape priorities and deliver outcomes. First-hand experience with AI development tools. The ability to create momentum in ambiguous situations by identifying constraints, bringing the right people together and making practical decisions.
  • Nice to haves: Building and operating distributed, cloud-native or multi-tenant SaaS systems at scale. Designing for resilience across services, event-driven systems and large relational or NoSQL data stores. Shipping LLM-backed or agentic capabilities in production. Working on workforce management, scheduling or another operationally complex product.

We care more about your technical depth, judgement and ability to learn than an exact match with our current stack. Enjoy a flexible work policy (with a work-from-home stipend to set you up for success!) Own a piece of Deputy via our Employee Share Ownership Plan (ESOP). Take paid parental leave to support you and your family. Stay protected with Group Salary Continuance Insurance. Access support through our Employee Assistance Program. Enjoy additional leave days — including study assistance, celebration days and volunteering. Join our global working groups focused on collaboration, belonging and connection. Get creative at our annual Hackathons. Take advantage of our novated leasing for electric vehicles, internet reimbursement and more!

How to prepare for a job interview at Deputy

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Deputy uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
